Before the Well Installation

Like many children in Kenya, 8-year-old Joseph is partially responsible for collecting water to meet his family's daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time, energy, and health.

Before the water project last year, people had to travel long distances to collect water.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Joseph, in particular, it lessened his chances of collecting sufficient water and staying healthy.

"Before the project, we didn’t have clean water close to our home because we sometimes had to rely on the scoop holes. I had to help fetch water from far away, and sometimes we didn’t have enough for drinking or bathing. It was very hard. My mother walked a long distance, and carrying the water made her tired. Sometimes she would come back home so late, and would take a lot of time trying to prepare food for us," said Joseph.

"I am doing better at school now. I get to class on time, and I can concentrate because I’m not too tired from fetching water. I have more time to play with my friends and read my books. I help my mother with small chores at home, and sometimes I water the plants too," said Joseph.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
