Lincoln Hopes to Help Others Needing Clean Water!

"I like fetching water here because it is available all [the] time and very clean. I can wake up at night, walk to the borehole, fetch water, and drink it directly without fear of getting sick the following day."

Before the Well Installation

Like many students in Kenya, 15-year-old Lincoln is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Lincoln, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to maintain his personal hygiene.

"Before this project was constructed, it was chaos for us as students. Some of us could go for a whole week without bathing because of [a] lack of enough water to serve our large population. Some of us were forced to go to the nearby forest to fetch water from a stream running through that forest. We could bathe there and carry some water [back] for kitchen use," shared Lincoln.

Since the Well Installation

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"My hygiene has greatly changed from the previous year. Since we now have clean water from the borehole, I can now bathe at least twice a day and washing clothes is now daily," said Lincoln.

"For me, living with clean water is a privilege that is more than being free from diseases and risk of [an] outbreak of water-related complications. I no [longer] worry about safety while fetching water. The waterpoint is closer to us and is easier to access without any safety concerns. "

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"When I saw what the donor did for us, I was challenged to think of ways of reaching out to suffering schools and communities. In [the] future, I want to reach out to vulnerable members of the community either through other interventions or through [the] provision of clean, safe water for drinking," Lincoln concluded.
