Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Sulaiman. Since then, he and the Mapitherr Community of 200 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"For the mere fact that the water source is close to me and well protected, it is a good reason that makes me like to fetch water from this water source."
Like many children in Sierra Leone, 14-year-old Sulaiman is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.
The previous water source.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Sulaiman, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to safely and quickly collect sufficient water.
"It was so difficult for me to fetch water before this project was completed. Before, this water well [my water source] was an open well without a hand pump. I used a rope and rubber gallon [bucket] to fetch water. It required time and energy to collect water from the well. Sometimes, I [was] not able to fetch enough water due to the situation of the well and this caused [me to] walk a long distance to fetch water. The well was located across the Port Loko road. I [had to] cross the road to fetch water, and this situation put my life at risk because vehicles or bikes passed at high speeds," shared Sulaiman.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Sulaiman’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"Clean water improves my health and helps someone to practice good hygiene. Clean water can be used for cooking and drinking purposes," said Sulaiman.
A year ago, you made a difference for Sulaiman and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Sulaiman a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.
"Since the completion of this project, I have been able to do well in my academic activities. I have been able to improve my exam grades. I manage my time well. Since fetching water doesn't take [a] long [time], I always use my time to study and read my notes after coming from school. I am dreaming to be a medical doctor so I will be able to take care of my parents," Sulaiman said.
