Before the Spring Protection

Like many women in Kenya, 60-year-old farmer Janepher Munyendo is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily needs. This task stole her time before last year’s water intervention and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Janepher, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to stay healthy and be successful at farming.

"It was cumbersome and risky getting water from this waterpoint due to standing water at the drawing [point] and sharp concrete that would easily hurt someone's feet. We suffered from typhoid, diarrhea, colds and flus, long queues, and rough surfaces," shared Janepher.

"I take much less time to collect water than before [the] implementation. I no longer worry about safety while fetching water because the waterpoint was well constructed and it [is] in [a] very good state, making it possible to get water [with] ease," said Janepher.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"Living with clean water causes good health. [I] am most proud of [my] good health, which has made me a productive member of the community. Since implementation, I have enjoyed good health and been able to fully engage in my farming, which [has] given me an increase in my harvest," Janepher shared.
