Agnes is More Hopeful for Her Future!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Agnes. Since then, she and the Mui Community of 200 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"I love that the waterpoint is now so close to our home. I can fetch water quickly and safely without worrying about long distances or the hot sun. It doesn’t take all my strength anymore, and I have more time and energy for school and helping at home," said Agnes.

Before the Well Installation

Like many girls in Southeastern Kenya, 17-year-old Agnes is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Community members previously relied on faraway, contaminated sources.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Agnes, it lessened her ability to stay healthy and focus in school.

"Fetching water was very tiring and stressful. The journey was long, and carrying heavy containers in the scorching sun drained all my energy. By the time I reached home, I was exhausted and still had schoolwork to do. Some days, I felt like I had no time to rest or concentrate on my studies because of the long hours spent walking for water," shared Agnes.

Since the Well Installation

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Agnes' future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"My health has improved a lot. I don’t get too tired or dehydrated like before because I no longer walk long distances in the heat. We now have clean water at home, so we wash our hands more often and keep the compound clean. I also fall sick less often because the water is safe and we maintain better hygiene," reported Agnes. "Clean water means less sickness, more time, and less stress. We can cook, wash, clean, and properly take care of our bodies. It has changed our lives at home; we feel healthier and happier."

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Agnes and her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

You gave Agnes a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help Agnes fulfill her dreams.

"I have improved academically. Since I no longer spend long hours fetching water, I have more time to study and complete my assignments. I am also less tired in class, so I can listen better and understand more. My performance and confidence have grown because I finally have time to focus on school," said Agnes.

She continued: "I now use my extra time to study, help with chores at home, and sometimes assist my mother with her activities. I also have time to rest properly, which I never used to have. Life feels more balanced, and I can do things that bring me joy and support my education."

"I dream of completing my education and building a better life for myself and my family. I hope to pursue a career that will allow me to support my community as well. Having water nearby gives me the time and health I need to concentrate on my goals, so I feel more hopeful about my future," she concluded.

Community members are thankful they can rely on the well water for their daily lives.
