Your gift last year unlocked Muteti's potential for a brighter future. Since then, he and the Tulanduli Community of 370 residents have had reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"It feels very good to fetch water close to my home because I get time to study and play with my friends."
Like many in Southeast Kenya, 10-year-old Muteti is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. This task stole his time before last year’s water intervention and negatively affected him.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in his community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Muteti, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to be healthy and attend school regularly.
"I would spend most of my time drawing water from the distant scoop holes in the past. Every evening after school or during holidays and weekends, I had to help my parents draw water from the scoop holes. The water was unclean, and I would often contract water-related infections, which forced me to be out of school. I would also abscond classes when there was no water at home to carry to school because we were required by the school administration to do so," shared Muteti.
"I got so tired going to fetch water from the scoop holes because they are located far away from my home. It was difficult to do my homework, because I would spend most of my time fetching water."
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Muteti’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"I help my parents to irrigate vegetables in our garden and [do] other house chores. I also play with my friends," said Muteti.
You made a difference for Muteti and the rest of his community a year ago. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Muteti a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to reliable water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill his dreams.
"I am now doing better in my studies because I do not get tired fetching water like I was in the past. I am able to attend school and concentrate in class. I also get time to do my homework at home. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher so that I can help my community," shared Muteti.
