Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Mwendwa. Since then, he and the Kitile Community of 980 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"Living with clean water means [a] good and healthy life free from diseases. When I think about water, my mind is relaxed, and the worries are less."
Like many in Southeastern Kenya, 16-year-old Mwendwa is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Mwendwa, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to go to school.
"We had a lot of problems related to water. The river was far away, and every day, my mom and I had to walk a long time to get water. I would get very exhausted, and coming back home, I would just lay in bed. I missed school because we had to spend so much time getting water. It was really hard," Mwendwa shared.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Mwendwa’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
The well that has provided water for a year!
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"I've been doing better in school since the waterpoint was installed. I don’t have to miss class anymore to go get water, so I can pay more attention. I feel like I can concentrate better and get my homework done faster too."
Mwendwa.
"Now that fetching water doesn’t take as long, I can spend more time playing with my friends, helping my parents, or doing my homework. Sometimes, I like to explore outside and read books," he continued.
A year ago, when this project was implemented, we provided hygiene and sanitation training. We asked Mwendwa how his hygiene had changed since the training. He said, "Our father has been very vigilant on handwashing practice, which we have adopted, and we can see the fruits as we no longer get sick as we used to. We bathe every day, and on very hot days, we are able to bathe even twice, especially when we play a lot."
A year ago, you made a difference for Mwendwa and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Mwendwa a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill his dreams.
"I dream of becoming an agriculturist and helping my father so much in doing research about soil and how he can make profits through planting the right varieties using the right farming methods," Mwendwa shared.
