Your gift unlocked Obed's potential for a brighter future last year. Since then, he and the 774 students and teachers at Machemo Primary School have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"Right now it's very easy to get water because the borehole is in our school. It's just a matter of pumping and getting water. The burden of carrying water from home and from the river has been lifted off our shoulders," said Obed.
Like many children in Kenya, 15-year-old Obed is responsible for collecting water to meet his and his family's daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected his health and ability to be in class learning.
Drinking the water had severe consequences. Many at his school suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems and affected their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant students wasted time collecting water, and the difficult journey sapped their physical and emotional energy.
"We only had two options: to carry water from home when coming to school in the morning and fetch water from the river while in school when water is exhausted. It was not easy considering the fatigue involved," said Obed.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Obed’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Our hygiene standards as a school have gone up. We wash our latrines every day. We wash our hands often because our handwashing containers no longer lack water. We can even clean our classrooms and ourselves when need be."
"My health has improved. I no longer experience stomach pains that would result from dirty water. Living with clean water within my school has enabled me to be comfortable both in and outside the classroom. I sip on my water while in class, especially after lunch, and I can also clean my feet after enjoying football on the pitch with my friends."
A year ago, you made a difference for Obed and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Obed a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help him fulfill his dreams.
"I have been able to concentrate in class because I no longer go out to fetch water during lessons. I attend all lessons fully, and this has resulted into improvement on my grades. I want to complete my education, get a well-paying job, and get my family out of poverty," exclaimed Obed.
