"I get enough water to drink throughout my stay here in school."

Before the Rain Tank Installation

Like many in Kenya, 16-year-old David is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

The previous water source - an insufficient rain tank.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For David, in particular, it lessened his opportunity to concentrate on learning.

"It was very difficult to get water to drink in the past because the plastic tanks would quickly run out of water and we had to bring our drinking water from home or wait for the school to acquire funds and purchase the water. Our meals would delay because of the water shortage and I would spend a lot of time queuing for water during breaks. It was difficult for us to conduct agriculture projects," said David.

"With the elimination of the need for us to carry water to school, my school attendance has improved. I arrive on time and [am] less fatigued from water collection duties, which has led me to participate better in class. Access to a reliable water source has allowed me to focus better on my studies. The reduction in water-related distractions and delays has contributed to a more conducive learning environment," said David.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for David and the rest of his school community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave David a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill dreams.

Field Officer Alex Koech shared: "The school has enough water for washing their hands, and the hand washing points have been set up in strategic areas like close to latrines and outside the classrooms. The school also has an agriculture project, which was made possible by water availability in the school. The school also has trees that are regularly irrigated."

With less worry and no energy wasted collecting water, David is on the right path for his future. He is using his time to improve in his academics which is important since he has big plans.

"When I grow up, I want to be an orthopedist," David said.
