Martin Gains Time for Studying!

Before the Well Installation

Like many in Southeastern Kenya, 16-year-old Martin is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking water from the previous water source caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy. For Martin, it meant his opportunity to attend school regularly was limited.

"Before this project was built, getting water was very difficult for my family. We depended on distant scoop holes that often had very little water, especially during the dry season. We had to spend many hours walking and waiting in long queues to collect water. The water was not always clean because livestock and other activities around the scoop holes could contaminate it. This exposed many families, including mine, to water-related illnesses and made it difficult to maintain good hygiene at home," recalled Martin.

"The process is much faster and easier than before, and there is less waiting. It is also reassuring to know that the water is safer for drinking and household use. The shorter distance means I spend less energy fetching water and have more time for schoolwork and other activities," said Martin.

We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"The best thing about living with clean water is that it improves health and makes daily life easier. My family can drink safer water, keep clean, and spend less time worrying about where to find water. Clean water has also reduced the stress and hardship that came with depending on unreliable and contaminated water sources," said Martin.

"The water point has had a positive impact on my education. Before, time spent helping to fetch water sometimes reduced the time available for studying and completing school assignments. Now, because water is easier to access, I have more time to focus on my studies, revise my lessons, and prepare for exams. I am able to attend school feeling less tired and more focused on learning.

"My dream is to complete my education and build a successful career that will allow me to support my family and improve our living conditions. I also hope to contribute positively to my community. Access to reliable water is helping me move closer to these goals because it gives me more time to focus on my studies and reduces the challenges that previously affected our daily lives. I believe that with education, hard work, and continued access to essential resources like water, I can achieve a better future.
