Water Brings Peace to Faith's Community!

"I no longer worry about safety when fetching water because I know people will not fight at the waterpoint again. No elderly person or young child will trip and fall due to poor terrain or lack of stairs. We all can access water easily and safely."

Before the Spring Protection

Like many young girls in Kenya, 16-year-old Faith is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

The spring before it was protected properly.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Faith, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to feel secure and accomplish the things she desired.

"Our water was not easy to collect. We could scoop several times to fill a container. People would sometimes crowd and fight for the water, especially during the dry season. It wasn't an enjoyable activity. Every scoop meant dirty water getting into my container. The tedious act would leave one exhausted even before carrying the water home," shared Faith.

"The water itself was not safe for drinking because it was just open," she continued.

"With a spring that does not dry up, I feel that this community's water problems are over!" said Faith.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Faith and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"Right now, it's so easy to fetch water. I enjoy walking into a clean spring that has fresh and safe water flowing freely. The water is safe and fills up so quickly," Faith said.

"Living with clean water can see communities living in harmony and peace. I have seen this water point bring peace and love between our community and the neighboring communities. When the water was dirty and scarce, we used to fight over it, but now it's clean and safe and readily available [so] we live in peace. Clean water is peace!" she exclaimed

"My dream is to complete my studies all the way to the university. When I am done, I want to come back to my community and empower the girl child by ensuring that they have sanitary towels. I believe this will boost their self-esteem," concluded Faith.
