Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Ian. Since then, he and the Lukhuna Community of 280 residents have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"[The] availability of clean water on a daily basis is a repellant to hygiene and water-related diseases. One can stay healthy for [a] long [time] just because of clean water." - Ian.
Like many young people in Kenya, 18-year-old Ian is responsible for collecting water to meet his and his family's daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in his community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs.
"The water itself was dirty, and unsafe for drinking. During the dry season, people from neighboring communities would crowd the spring making it impossible even for us to get water. It was the only water we had, so there was no option other than [to] use it. We fully depended on the unsafe water for everything," shared Ian.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Ian’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"The spring was done during my final high school year. [The] availability of clean water helped me improve my grades at school since I could take [a] very short time at the spring and use the rest [of my time] to study especially during the holidays. Now that I am in a vocational training college, I am doing well, as a result of safe and reliable water," said Ian.
"It's been a year and I haven't been to the hospital due to water-related diseases. With the chlorine dispenser at our spring, the water has become much safer."
A year ago, you made a difference for Ian and the rest of his community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Ian a crucial tool for achieving his dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, his enthusiasm and courage will help fulfill his dreams.
"I feel this community's water problems are over since this protected waterpoint never dries up so they have access to water all year round," said Ian.
"I am able to go to college on time. While at home, I am able to engage in activities like farming and house construction. My dream is to complete my course at college, work, and still engage in agribusiness. I want to be an exporter of fresh farm produce."
