Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Ndinda. Since then, she and the Ngungani Community have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!
"I like that it’s so easy now. The water point is much closer to my home, and it only takes a few minutes to fill up a jerrycan."
Like many girls in Southeast Kenya, 14-year-old Ndinda is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.
Community members walked to the previous faraway water source.
Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Ndinda, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to attend school regularly and have the energy to learn.
"Fetching water before was really exhausting. I had to walk for hours, sometimes even before sunrise, just to get enough water for the day. It would take so much time, and by the time I got back home, I was too tired to do anything else," shared Ndinda.
"The water from the scoop holes wasn’t clean, and it often made me and my family sick. We didn’t have enough water for drinking, cooking, or even washing ourselves properly," she continued.
Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Ndinda’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.
The completed well.
Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"
"The water is clean, and I don’t have to worry about getting sick. It saves me a lot of time, and I can even help others fetch water, too," said Ndinda.
"The best thing about living with clean water is that I don’t have to worry about getting sick anymore. We can drink the water safely, and it has helped us stay healthy. We also have enough water for all our daily needs, like cooking, cleaning, and even bathing. It feels really good to have clean water available all the time," she continued.
A year ago, you made a difference for Ndinda and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!
At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.
You gave Ndinda a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.
"I’ve been doing much better in school since the waterpoint was installed. Before, I was often tired from fetching water and sometimes missed school because of it. Now that I have more time and energy, I can focus better in class. My grades have improved, and I’m able to study harder because I’m not distracted by the need to fetch water," said Ndinda.
"My dream is to become a doctor one day. I want to help people in my community and other places, especially with health issues like those caused by unsafe water. I believe that with good health, we can do anything, and I want to be part of the change that makes a difference in people’s lives. Having access to clean water will make it easier for me to focus on my studies and achieve my dreams," Ndinda concluded.
