Operation School for All

Dear Friends and Families,

Author Christine Ieronimo has recently visited the James Vernon Elementary School in Oyster Bay to discuss her book A Thirst For Home - A Story of Water across the World. The story is about her Ethiopian adopted daughter Eva (Alemitu), and it touches on the plight of many children in Africa, especially girls, who are prevented from going to school because of the daily and arduous task of walking many miles every day in search of water for their survival and the survival of their families.

After reading the book, Vernon student Erik Ravn researched ways to help these children by embracing this worthy cause of bringing clean water to African communities. He started a recycling campaign to encourage the students to recycle water bottles and donate the proceeds to thewaterproject.org.

Oyster Bay High School student Skylar Guercia was especially touched by the lack of opportunity African girls have to go to school, prompting her initiative to expand this campaign to her school as well, joining in and mobilizing the students to recycle and donate. 

The recycling aspect of this campaign focuses on encouraging the participation of all students, while directly impacting our community and the environment by helping to keep garbage from landfills and oceans.

Our initial goal is to raise $750.00 to share in a water project. We are working hard collecting bottles and we would also appreciate online donations through this webpage. No donation is too small, every dollar counts!
