For my IB education Grade 10 personal project I have decided to swim 1.8 km to raise money for clean and accessible water in Sub- Saharan Africa. The charity I’m fundraising for is called The Water Project. The project is about helping people in Sub-Saharan Africa to increase access to clean water. The lack of clean water has not only affected the health of people but also their education.
Girls and women are the most impacted by this issue. Think about it: “everyday, women and young girls carry more than 40 pounds of dirty water from sources over 4 miles away from their homes”, which deteriorates their school attendance. This quote from The Water Project website highlights the struggle and pain the women and girls have to go through everyday just to have access to water. Not only does the lack of water have an impact on their education, but according to statistics “In developing countries about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions”.
Reading and learning more about this issue encouraged me to help the people in need of clean water. My decision to fundraise for a water related charity was also supported by the fact that water is one closest things to my heart, as swimming is my favourite sport, and the one I currently do. I also want to enable women to have a voice in their communities so they can receive the education they deserve. The Water Project aims to provide a better, brighter and healthier future for them, therefore any donations no matter how big or small will be extremely appreciated and will make a difference!
Thank you,
Dorothy Varga
