Before the Well Installation

Like many girls in Kenya, 15-year-old Margaret was responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task consumed her time and had a negative impact on her.

The students' old water source was often contaminated.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Margaret, in particular, it lessened her chances of staying healthy and strong.

"Before you came to our rescue, I used to waste a lot of time searching for water, and when I found it, I still had to grapple with safety concerns. The water was mostly contaminated, and often led to illnesses. Sometimes I would miss lessons due to illness, and that had a negative impact on my grades," recalled 15-year-old Margaret.

"Believe it or not, I haven't been treated for any water-related illness in the past twelve months! Thanks to this waterpoint, I'm very healthy now. A life without worrying about water-related illnesses is something I cherish very much. Clean water certainly transforms lives," celebrated Margaret.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"I can't complain. My performance has improved a great deal. I record better grades, and I'm looking forward to joining junior high school next year. I'd love to emerge [at the] top of my class at the end of this year! I'd love to complete my academic journey and become a doctor so as to provide healthcare services to members of my community," said Margaret.
