"I like fetching water here because it is easier to access and the water is clean," declared Darlingtone.

Before the Spring Protection

Like many children in Western Kenya, 10-year-old Darlingtone is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking water from the previous water source caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy. For Darlingtone, it meant that his opportunities to attend school and stay healthy were limited.

"It was very difficult to get water before this project was completed. Stepping in dirty water and taking [in] dirty water [was] what I hated most," said Darlingtone.

"This project has changed my health because I always [have] clean water. My hygiene has changed because I always remember to wash my hands with soap and drink clean water," Darlingtone said.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"I have improved academically because I'm [not] absent from school due to sickness anymore. I use my time to do school work and also help my grandmother with housework," Darlingtone said. "I wish to be a doctor so that I can treat children when they fall sick."
