Before the Spring Protection

Like many girls in Western Kenya, 10-year-old Shantel is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking water from the previous water source caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy. For Shantel, it meant her time was consumed collecting water.

"Before [the] construction of this spring, fetching water was not easy. I had to step on water while fetching water, which also led to diseases. Consumption of unsafe water leads to waterborne diseases, which affects my health negatively and [created] unplanned debt for my parents," recalled Shantell.

Reliable, clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic opportunities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Fetching water now is very easy. The water point is beautiful, with the installation of pipe, tiles, and [a] staircase has made access to [the] water point easy," celebrated Shantel.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"My health has greatly changed since this water point was constructed. Since [the] implementation of this water point, I have never been affected by water-related diseases. Access to clean water promotes good health and has helped my mother reduce unplanned expenses on medication," said Shantel.

"Being free from water-related illnesses has allowed me to attend school regularly, which has helped improve [my] academic performance. Over the past year, my studies have greatly improved compared to before, showing that access to safe water is critical for human well-being," Shantel continued.

"Over the past year, I have experienced a positive change in my academic performance. I strongly believe living with clean water will unlock my full potential and help me achieve my dreams of becoming a school teacher in the future," Shantel declared.
