Jael's Self-Esteem is Boosted!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Jael. Since then, she and the Malava Primary School of 1,327 students have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"Clean water contributes to self-esteem and confidence. I am so confident when I am clean and neat. This is achieved using clean water."

Before the Well Installation

Like many young women in Kenya, 18-year-old Jael is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

A student collects water from the previous water source.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Jael, in particular, she was often tired from the journey and sick from the water she worked so hard to collect.

"We used to get water from an unprotected hand-dug well. The water was contaminated, [and] was never enough, especially during the dry season. When [the] hand-dug well went dry, we would walk out of school to get water from a protected spring. It used to be far, and the road was so busy for us to maneuver while carrying water," said Jael.

"Getting water from our previous sources was tiresome in a manner that pulling water from the hand-dug well was heavy and carrying water from the spring/home was even heavier."

Since the Well Installation

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this community and Jael’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"I am no longer worried about safety when I am fetching water. The new waterpoint is much safer; I just pump, and I have my water. I don't cross roads to get water. I don't expect road accidents to happen to me again," Jael said.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Jael and the rest of her community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave Jael a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can excitedly expect that with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams.

"Slowly, my performance is improving since I am spending more time in my books. Spending more time with my teachers, courtesy of enough water in school has seen me change my attitude towards some subjects that I had given up on. With this attitude, I know I will keep improving. I dream of becoming a major journalist in news broadcasting," shared Jael.
