Mrs. Vutu and Her Students Make Great Progress!

Last year, your gift unlocked the potential for a brighter future for Agneta Vutu and her students. Since then, she and the Kasanga Primary School community of 264 students and teachers have had clean, reliable water. Your contribution has made a significant impact. Thank you for making a difference!

"The water point is right within the school, so there’s no need to walk long distances. It’s clean, reliable, and readily available whenever we need it. It has brought a great sense of convenience y to our daily school operations," shared Agneta Vutu.

Before the Rain Tank Installation

Like many teachers in Kenya, 38-year-old Agneta Vutu was responsible for supervising students who collected water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task took up her and her students' time and negatively affected them.

Students used to spend hours collecting water.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Mrs. Vutu, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to provide the education she would like for her students.

"Before the project, getting water was extremely difficult. Pupils were required to bring water from home daily, and often, the amount wasn’t enough. We also had to rely on costly water vendors who sourced water from unsafe scoop holes and boreholes that would dry up during droughts. Sometimes, we’d go without water completely if the vendor didn’t deliver on time. It was stressful for both teachers and learners and interfered with the running of school programs," shared Mrs. Vutu.

Since the Rain Tank Installation

Your generous gift last year was much more than a simple donation; it was a powerful statement about your commitment to this school community and Mrs. Vutu’s future. By supporting the water solution, you made clean water an everyday reality, fostering hope for a brighter future.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Our health has significantly improved. We no longer suffer [from] frequent water-related illnesses like stomach upsets or typhoid. With less sickness, we’re more productive, and learners miss fewer classes. Personally, I now have more time and peace of mind to focus on teaching instead of managing water-related crises," Mrs. Vutu reported.

The Future is Looking Bright!

A year ago, you made a difference for Mrs. Vutu and the rest of her school community. This is just the first chapter of their story as access to clean water continues to improve their lives!

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

You gave her a crucial tool for achieving her dreams: access to clean water. Together, we can eagerly expect that, with this precious resource, her enthusiasm and courage will help her fulfill her dreams of being a fully engaged teacher without being consumed by distractions.

"Clean water means better hygiene, better health, and the ability to plan and execute school activities without constant disruptions. It’s made school life smoother for everyone. Students no longer carry water to school every morning, which has reduced their fatigue. They’re healthier and cleaner, and their concentration in class has improved. They now have time for co-curricular activities and learning, especially agriculture, where they tend the vegetable farm," said Mrs. Vutu.

"I’m most proud of how much we’ve grown as a school community. From improved hygiene and student health to launching the school farm and planning a feeding program—clean water has been the foundation for all these positive changes. It’s given us dignity and room to dream bigger," she concluded.
