Clean Water Brings Anthony Relief!

"I like fetching water here because it is now very close, clean, and easy to access," exclaimed Anthony.

Before the Well Installation

Like many young people in Southeastern Kenya, 17-year-old Anthony is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Anthony, it lessened his opportunity to stay healthy and do well in school.

"Life was very difficult when it came to getting water. We used to walk several kilometers to River Katse, and the journey was exhausting, especially for young people like me who also had schoolwork to focus on. Sometimes I would wake up very early or come back late in the evening just to help my family fetch water. The worst part was that the water exposed us to water-related issues like stomach aches and diarrhea because it was drawn from scoop holes shared by both people and animals. We wasted many hours every week that could have been used for studying or helping at home," recalled Anthony.

"I no longer have to walk long distances or wait in long queues. The water point is organized, safe, and reliable, even during the dry season. Fetching water now takes a few minutes instead of hours, and I feel relieved knowing that the water is good for my health and my family," said Anthony.

He continued to share how access to clean water has made a difference in his life.

"My health has improved a lot. Before, I used to get stomach problems, fatigue, and sometimes headaches from walking long distances and drinking dirty water. Now that the water is clean, I hardly get sick from waterborne diseases. I feel stronger, I have more energy, and I can focus better in school. Even at home, we maintain better hygiene because we have enough water," he shared.

"The best thing is the peace and comfort that comes with having safe water nearby. We no longer worry about getting sick or struggling to find water during drought. Clean water makes life easier—washing, cooking, cleaning, and drinking are all stress-free. It has brought dignity and hope back into our home," Anthony shared.

"Since the water point was installed, my academics have improved. I have more time to study, and I attend school more regularly because I’m not tired from fetching water. My concentration in class has increased, and I feel motivated knowing that I can now balance school and home responsibilities better. I now use my time more productively. I spend more time studying, helping with chores, and even relaxing or playing with my friends. I also help my parents with small projects around the home, like watering trees and keeping the compound clean. Having more free time has helped me feel more focused and less stressed," he noted.

"My dream is to become an engineer in the future. I want to help design and build projects that improve communities just like this one. Having access to clean water gives me the time, energy, and good health I need to chase this dream. With more time to study and a healthier environment at home, I feel confident that I can achieve my goals," Anthony bravely shared.
