Esther's Farming Dreams are Coming True!

"I like fetching water from this pump because it is really easy to fetch. You just pump once, and water starts to come out," Esther shared excitedly.

Like many women in Kenya, 55-year-old farmer Esther is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Esther, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to complete her daily chores.

"We really struggled a lot fetching water because we only have one spring around, and it is not near. I used to walk long distances just to collect enough water for my family, which was not easy at all. Sometimes I used to use rainwater during the rainy seasons because the spring was quite far away, and with our large population, I used to [wait in] long queues which made us wait in line just to collect water and due to this, we really wasted most of our day just fetching water for use that I couldn't do much at home," Esther said.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"I love that now I have clean water near my home without walking long distances, and now I am not worried [about] my family and me getting ill from drinking contaminated [and[]unclean water. I don't have to walk long distances anymore just to collect water, and now I can save a lot of time to do my farming at home, and also the water is always clean and clear," Esther celebrated.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"I am proud to say that for the past year I have really improved in my farming, that I couldn't [have] imagined I could. Now with money from my vegetable farming, little by little, I saved up to buy a cow and 3 chickens for rearing," Esther proudly shared.

"As a farmer, I'm planning on adding more cows and [to] do large-scale poultry farming now that I have clean water near me. It will be so easy for me, which will help me earn more income," Esther said.
