"I like fetching water here because it is close to our home and the water is clean. I don’t have to wake up in the dark anymore, and I do not get as tired as before," said Patricia.

Before the Well Installation

Like many girls in Southeastern Kenya, 12-year-old Patricia is responsible for collecting water to meet daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Community members previously had to walk long distances to collect water.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Patricia, it lessened her opportunity to stay healthy and do her schoolwork.

"Last year, getting water was very difficult for my family and I. We had to walk very long distances to the community borehole or the Mui River. Sometimes we woke up when it was still dark so that we could reach before the water ran out. Carrying heavy jerrycans on my back made my shoulders and legs very painful. The water was also not very clean because animals came to drink there and sometimes made the place dirty. Because of all this, I was often tired and did not have enough time for schoolwork," shared Patricia.

Reliable, clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic opportunities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"The best thing is that life feels easier and safer. I can drink and use water without worrying about getting sick. I have more time to play, study, and help my mother with other chores. Clean water has made our home more comfortable, and everyone is happier," Patricia said.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"Now that I spend less time fetching water, I use my extra time to study, rest, play with my friends, and help with other chores at home. My schoolwork has improved a lot. Since I no longer spend many hours fetching water, I have more time and energy to do homework and revise. I reach school on time and am not tired during lessons, enabling me to be more active and focused. I even perform better in class than I did before," reported Patricia.

"I dream of becoming a teacher so that I can help children in my community learn and have a better future. Access to clean water makes this dream easier because I now have time to study, stay healthy, and focus on my schoolwork. I feel hopeful that with water nearby, I can achieve anything I put my mind to," she concluded.
