Hudson's Family is Healthier

"I like that fetching water here is easy and convenient. It saves time and energy," shared Hudson.

Before the Spring Protection

Like many in Western Kenya, 65-year-old farmer Hudson Muganda is responsible for collecting water to meet his daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole his time and negatively affected him.

Drinking the water from the previous water source caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Hudson, it meant he and his family often suffered from waterborne illnesses.

"Before this project was built, water was a serious challenge for us. The water we used was often not clean, which caused sickness in our households. The backfill area was open to contamination because we couldn't protect it. The path was slippery and broken, which led to many accidents along the way, especially during the rainy season. The water point was broken, so most of the water was wasted," shared Hudson.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Now, it takes me only a short time to collect water; just [a] few minutes because the water point is near my home. There are no long queues that used to waste our time. Fetching water has been made easier and faster," reported Hudson.

At The Water Project, we value sustainability and want to ensure that people continue to thrive. We commit to monitoring this project to ensure the water is always flowing and safe to consume. We inspect system hardware, monitor water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water-quality samples to identify risks. We work with our on-the-ground team to resolve them.

"The best thing about living with clean water is that my family and I are healthier. We no longer get sick from drinking dirty water, and our children can attend school regularly instead of staying home because of illness," said Hudson.

"Since this project was implemented, my health has improved, and I now have more time and energy to grow vegetables that I sell. I can now irrigate my garden easily, grow more vegetables, and earn income from selling them. This project has not only made life healthier but has also helped me support my family through farming," he continued.

"My dreams for the future are to live a healthy and peaceful life, support my family well, and expand my farming, incorporating livestock and chickens. I hope to grow more vegetables and fruits, keep animals like sheep and goats, [and] rear chickens. Earn a steady income and maybe support my children and grandchildren with education and daily needs."
