Patience Can Achieve Her Goals, Thanks to Reliable Water!

"To fetch water now is very easy, more so, water is safe and clean for drinking, no more absenteeism because of sickness caused by contaminated water," said Patience.

Before the Well Installation

Like many girls in Western Kenya, 13-year-old Patience is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Patience, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to focus on school.

"It was so difficult to get water since the hand-dug well in the school dried up. We had to move out of the school compound to fetch water for both drinking and cleaning, which was not enough. It was also very insecure for us alone, thus we were accompanied by the teacher and ended up missing classes, which led to poor performance," said Patience.

Reliable and clean water lays the groundwork for improved health, education, and economic possibilities, allowing people to thrive. We frequently hear from those we interview that "water is life!"

"Since the day that the pump was installed, my health has positively changed. No more typhoid and stomach pain, which had impacted my health negatively, I had to miss school every term to seek medication, which had also drained my parent [finances] too," said Patience.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"My ambition is to be a teacher, and with the clean, safe, and reliable water, my dreams will come through because there is no obstacle that will hinder me from achieving my goal. This is because now I spend most of the time on my studies," Patience declared.
