My name is Charlotte, and I am twelve years old. Me and my friends, Eden and Asia, have decided to help with the water problem in Africa. Even though we’re kids, that doesn’t make our impact and our effort irrelevant. We can still help. We still still want to help. We are going to try to help a little of a large problem. Today, 320 million people in Africa do not have access to clean water. They have to send their children to walk mile after mile, to get mud-filled water that isn’t safe to drink. But we can change that. With $8,000 we can help at least a little bit. And though it seems like a big goal, I know that we can get enough people to be aware and care about this problem, and if everyone who sees this can pitch in, I know we can help give an African village a clean source of water.

I recently learned a lot about the water problems in Africa through a book we read called ‘A Long Walk to Water’, by Linda Sue Park. It is about a Boy named Salva, who lives in South Sudan during the civil war on his way to Ethiopia, and a 11 year old girl named Nya, who has to walk half a morning every day to get unclean drinking water, that actually ends up making her sister sick. This inspired me to search deeper, which made me find Rick Steves’ Ethiopia episode. I found these and decided that I wanted to help.

When I see the children and families that have to suffer like this, I think of how often we take advantage of our easy access to water in our everyday lives. I want to do more than just sit back and feel bad for them, which is why I’m taking action. I know that $8,000 might not do much, but at least we can make even the smallest difference to help give a village a clean water well.

We can do this together. We can make a difference.

I want to thank: Linda Sue Park for inspiring me, Rick Steves for raising awareness and caring, Mom and Dad, who helped me take the steps to start the fundraiser, My friends, Eden McCrory and Asia Nguyen for helping me every step of the way, and everyone listed below for donating.

How this works

Dirty water impacts health, education, women, and income. Providing a reliable and safe water source allows communities to thrive.

The Water Project provides access to safe and reliable water across sub-Saharan Africa. Together, our support can end the water crisis and restore hope, one community at a time.

The coolest part? We'll all get to see our impact! Every gift is directly linked to a specific water project and community. We'll receive updates including photos and stories, maps and more!

Lives change when communities gain access to clean water. Let's experience it together. Make a donation to my fundraising campaign today!
