Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them, edited for clarity:

PROPOSED REHAB PROJECT

The proposed Lureka Jamia Mosque/Community Water Project Rehab is a hand dug well which was initiated by community members in collaboration with the neighboring Jamia mosque in the year 2006.  In the year 2007 the community sought help from well wishers who fundraised and bought a jua kali (fabricated pump) which was installed in the same year. The hand pump remained in use until the year 2009 when it developed mechanical problems after which it was dumped and later stolen by unknown people. Since then the community members have gone back to fetch water from an unprotected stream which have in turn caused them waterborne diseases like typhoid. Due to this situation, the community who are also members of the Lureko Jamia Mosque have expressed their wish for the well to be rehabilitated by installing an Affridev pump so as to enjoy good and quality water from the well.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The community currently accesses water from a stream located 11/2km away and the quality of water is not good. Turbidity value of water from the stream is 80, below the recommended standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).

POPULATION

The community has a population of 800 members and 300 worshipers of the neighboring Jamia Mosque.

SANITATION AND HYGIENE

The hygiene and sanitation of the people in the community is at risk because many have dug their latrines close to the stream which in turn contaminates the source. There are no hand washing points in the homesteads and neither do people boil nor chlorinate the water for drinking.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project will benefit community members of Lureko  and the Jamia Mosque worshipers.

ASSESSING THE NEED

The Bridge Water Project has seen the need to rehabilitate the borehole and install an Affridev pump so as to enable the community to have access to clean and quality water for their domestic use and to improve their sanitation and hygiene standards.

WATER COMMITTEE

The committee of Lureko Jamia Mosque has already appointed members among themselves who will be in charge of the water supply management committee.Bridge Water Project is working with the committee to ensure they have the capacity to manage the facility into the future.

Project Updates

March, 2024: Project Change at Lureko Jamia Mosque!

Projects, like water itself, are fluid.

Sometimes, there are unique circumstances that can neither be resolved nor reversed that turn a well-loved water point into one that has failed to meet the expectations of both the community it serves and our own commitment to help provide access to safe and reliable water.

Unfortunately, this well is no longer meeting the water needs of the Lureko Jamia Mosque Community, despite repeated efforts, spent resources, and a lot of patience from the community and our team.

The Water Project, the community members, and local leaders have decided together that decommissioning the well was the best course of action. As a result, we will no longer make monitoring visits here.

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
