Our partner in the field reports...
"Devanoor is a small village which is located 45 kilometers in the northwest direction in Thatheiyankarpettai block of Trichy District, where 100 scheduled caste families with a population of 500 live in huts. They are untouchables in the eyes of the society. They have very low status economically. They are landless agricultural laborer eke out a living on daily wages by working in the fields of caste people. Some of them take up to the earth work, construction labor, and road laying activities for meager income. There is a public tap in their street which is the only drinking water source they depend on, and most of the time it is dry owing to irregular supply of drinking water through the public tap. There is one hand pump installed by the government some years ago which was damaged and is not in use and has became a failure. Currently women and children of the community have to walk quite a distance to places where the drinking water sources are availed. A deep bore well with hand pump could solve their drinking water need all through the years. The village community has appealed to DPWA to install a deep bore well with hand pump.
Well Dedication Report
This village of about 500 people is comprised of 100 scheduled caste families viewed as untouchables. They are agricultural laborers and some do construction work for low wages. The only public tap is consistently dry and the hand pump installed by the government is damaged. Women and children were walking long distances to available and now thanks to the support of the Performers for Progress these families have access to clean drinking water in their village at any time.
With the first dedication of the day, we arrived here, greeted by multiple children in uniform ready for a day at school as well as many women and a few men. The children were buzzing with excitement. What a blessing to have bath water before a busy day at school and a fresh drink before they leave. The government leader present was full of praise and appreciation looking forward to attaining more wells for his villages.
