The large community of Butunyi has 560 people who are doing their best, but without access to clean water, they are constantly at risk. They rely on Mwandia Spring for their water needs, but it is crumbling.

Community members carry water for their daily needs.
Water barely flows from the discharge pipe, consuming people's time and testing their patience, but without an alternative, they must waste valuable time collecting it.
Collecting the water is not the only struggle. The water isn’t safe to consume, and community members report that they often suffer from typhoid, stomachaches, and other waterborne diseases.

The spring needs protection.
When the entire community struggles with water-related illnesses, it has a significant impact. Children miss school. Parents lose income trying to pay for treatment. Life revolves around surviving, not thriving.
The community has attempted to address the problem on its own, but it lacks the necessary materials and skilled labor to effect lasting improvements.
Thirty-year-old Christine Murumba is all too very familiar with the struggle.

"We drink the water because that is the only source we can access, but it worries me a lot because it's not safe," Christine lamented.
"One of my children recently fell sick, and it was hard seeing him struggle like that. He wasn't even able to go to school for a week, and his friends had to bring him school notes every evening so that he could catch up, but he wasn't able to be productive," shared Christine.
"Reduced income after treating water-related illnesses, and children missing school when they are sick, causing them to be behind in their classes, leads to poor performance," Christine said as she described the symptoms of her community's water crisis.

Yet, Christine is still hopeful about the future for her and her children, if her dream of clean water can be realized.
"Access to clean and safe water will lower the cases of water-related illnesses. Also, our children will sit in their classes and learn more," she said.
"In life, water is a necessity. We need water to do almost everything, and life gets easier when water is available," Christine exclaimed.
The people of Butunyi remain hopeful. They dream of raising livestock, sending children to school, and building better lives. A safe, reliable water source would change everything: it would improve health, restore income, and give families a real chance at a better future.
Steps Toward a Solution
Our technical experts worked with the local community to identify the most effective solution to their water crisis. They decided to safeguard the existing flowing spring.
Spring Protection
Springs are natural water sources that originate from deep underground. As water travels through various layers of the earth, it undergoes a natural filtration process, making it cleaner and safer to drink. To protect these spring sources from contamination, we construct a waterproof cement structure around layers of clay, stone, and soil. This design channels the spring water through a discharge pipe, facilitating easier, faster, and cleaner water collection.
Chlorine Dispenser
As an extra measure towards water quality safety, uniquely engineered chlorine dispensers are installed at all of our spring protection projects so community members can treat their water with pre-measured doses of chlorine. The chlorine treats any possible contamination and stays active for two to three days, ensuring water stays safe to use even when stored at home. Chlorine delivery and maintenance of the dispensers are part of our ongoing community support.
Community Education & Ownership
Hygiene and sanitation training are integral to our water projects. Training is tailored to each community's specific needs and includes key topics such as proper water handling, improved hygiene practices, disease transmission prevention, and care of the new water point. Safe water and improved hygiene habits foster a healthier future for everyone in the community.
Encouraged and supported by our team's guidance, the community elects a water user committee representative of its diverse members. This committee assumes responsibility for maintaining the water point, organizing community efforts, and gathering fees to ensure its upkeep.
