This project was implemented by another partner, but is now monitored and maintained by The Water Project together with Mariatu's Hope.
"This school and community will soon have access to electricity. Seriously, like going from the stone age to the 21st century with good clean water, sanitation, electricity and most importantly of all Jesus, who is very present in this project and whose fingerprints are all over the lives of the children and the people of this community. I can only imagine what the sight will be if we return in three more years. I tell Papa God plenty plenty tenke for what He has allowed me to see and for the renewing of hope that has flooded my soul. As I looked in the picture folder for this report I saw the folder labeled "broken blocks" and the Holy Spirit quickened me to the fact that it is only until we completely broken that He can begin to rebuild us as He wants us to be." When the team arrived, community members were suffering from malaria, diarrhea and severe dehydration. Most community members earn a living by gardening, petty trading, teaching, working as tailors, masons, welders or work as other professionals. There are two schools in the community. A primary school and secondary school whose students, teachers and administrative personnel all have access to the new, safe water source.
The Sierra Leone team had an opportunity to meet with twelve year old community member and students in class 5, Humanatu Sesay, who stated, "These toilets are fine!! I'm so happy Thank you! I've never seen toilets like this. God bless you! This piken will attend school here when she gets bigger. I'm so excited about this development!"
The hygiene training was held with two other schools that also had sanitation projects constructed. The teachers had a great time together. They were actively engaged in the lessons. When we first did the rehab at this school back in 2008 we came in and taught the students. This time around we are taking an SSHE/SLTS approach where we teach the teachers and the teachers train the students and the students take what they have learned back out to the community through a Child Health Club. A water and sanitation committee will also be formed at this school well. The teachers were really excited about this development and vowed to do their very best to have this be a sustainable project. The teachers were given the curriculum and training manuals and had an opportunity to teach the lessons back to their colleagues with us present for support. They did a great job! We will be doing a project next year that includes an agricultural project. We will be using the community well for this project and will encourage the use of the fertilizer from this sanitation project. It's truly amazing how God puts things together! During the hygiene education, the team addressed: Disease transmission, germs, hand washing, proper water saving techniques, healthy and unhealthy communities, how to take proper care of the pump, how to keep the water clean, clean hands and clean hearts and dental hygiene.
