Before the Well Installation

Like many girls in Uganda, 15-year-old Pheona is responsible for collecting water to meet her daily water needs. Before last year’s water intervention, this task stole her time and negatively affected her.

Drinking the water caused severe consequences. Many in the community suffered from waterborne diseases that created health problems, affecting their daily lives. Limited accessibility also meant people wasted time collecting sufficient water to meet their needs. The difficult journey to collect water sapped their physical and emotional energy, creating roadblocks. For Pheona, in particular, it lessened her opportunity to attend school regularly.

"Before this waterpoint was established, I had to travel a long distance to fetch water, and sometimes I would miss lessons because I had to hurry home to collect water," said Pheona.

"It was difficult because the water source required prolonged pumping before the water would start flowing, which took up a lot of time and caused long queues as people had to wait for the water to flow after waiting for so long," she continued.

We inspect the system hardware, track water availability, conduct sanitary inspections, and collect water quality samples to identify risks. We work with our team on the ground to resolve them.

"My performance has improved because I no longer have to rush home from school to fetch water, allowing me to complete all my school work on time," Pheona shared.

When we asked Pheona if she had any dreams for the future, she said, "Becoming a doctor. I have enough time to read books, and I am sure I will make it."

Community Profile

The 80 community members of Katugo struggle to access sufficient water. There is a hand-dug well in the community that has dried up and a borehole well in a nearby community, but it is overcrowded, and access is restricted. People are left unable to collect the water they need to meet their daily needs.

"The main water source is currently dry, and water is not flowing; however, the alternative water sources are very congested and locked most of the time, and people don't have easy access to them," said our field officer Susan Alobo. The locked well in the nearby community is shown below.

"Since our shallow well dried up, we have been having challenges accessing water from other water points. Each time I go to collect water from the neighboring water point, we are denied since it's always locked. I take a lot of time [to collect water] due to the heavy congestion and end up returning home late, and my activities are also affected. The sanitation situation in my home has highly deteriorated since I have to use the little water I collect sparingly," said 32-year-old farmer Agnes Paramwa, shown below carrying water.

Without adequate water, everything becomes more challenging for community members, even for the youngest among them.

"There is always a lot of congestion each time the water point is unlocked. People struggle to collect water, and the elder people always deny us [the] opportunity to collect water even when we came before them. Several fights happened at the source, and one day I got scared and came back home without water to wash my uniforms. This made me miss school the following day," said 12-year-old Lillian K., shown below carrying water.

The installation of a well will enable people like Agnes and Lillian to have sufficient water to meet their needs so they can focus on taking care of their daily responsibilities instead of wasting their time and energy fighting for water.

The Proposed Solution, Determined Together...

At The Water Project, everyone has a part in conversations and solutions. We operate in transparency, believing it benefits everyone. We expect reliability from one another as well as our water solutions. Everyone involved makes this possible through hard work and dedication.

In a joint discovery process, community members determine their most advantageous water solution alongside our technical experts. Read more specifics about this solution on the What We're Building tab of this project page. Then, community members lend their support by collecting needed construction materials (sometimes for months ahead of time!), providing labor alongside our artisans, sheltering and feeding the builders, and supplying additional resources.

Water Access for Everyone

This water project is one piece in a large puzzle. In Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, we're working toward complete coverage of reliable, maintained water sources that guarantee public access now and in the future within a 30-minute round trip for each community, household, school, and health center. One day, we hope to report that this has been achieved!

Training on Health, Hygiene & More

With the community's input, we've identified topics where training will increase positive health outcomes at personal, household, and community levels. We'll coordinate with them to find the best training date. Some examples of what we train communities on are:

  • Improved hygiene, health, and sanitation habits
  • Safe water handling, storage & treatment
  • Disease prevention and proper handwashing
  • Income-generation
  • Community leadership, governance, & election of a water committee
  • Operation and maintenance of the water point

Project Updates


March, 2024: Katugo Community New Well Complete!

A new borehole well was drilled in Katugo Community, Uganda, and it is already providing community members with clean, safe water! Additionally, we hosted a training where community members worked together to make a development action plan for their area. As a result, families are working to build new sanitation and hygiene facilities, tools, and habits that will help improve their living standards and enable a healthier life.

"I'm able to collect enough water on time. No more worries of being bullied at the waterpoint by the elders who used to remove our jerrycans from the line, and I can even get some time to play football with my friends," said 11-year-old Edmond.

When asked how water would help Edmond, he said he plans to maintain proper personal hygiene and clean his uniforms to avoid being punished at school.

New Borehole

We worked with the community to determine the best site to drill this new well. We confirmed the site's eligibility by conducting a hydrogeological survey, which proves that the water table belowground is at a sustainable level before drilling begins.

Several households volunteered to host our team of drilling technicians, giving them a place to sleep and food to eat throughout their work. Many community members also came to the work site each day to watch the drilling and see the well come to life.

When it came time to build the cement well pad, community members found fine sand and water to mix the cement. After the cement platform dried, we installed a stainless steel Consallen pump, which is now flowing with clean, safe water!

"I'm no longer going to move long distances to collect water. This borehole will make it easy for me to send my grandchildren to fetch water without any worries with them crossing the road," said 72-year-old farmer Benadeta Biwinzire.

Training

The self-help group associated with the project was set up and began training in advance of selecting this project.

The first training session focused on financial planning. We mobilized the community through a series of meetings that sensitized them on the importance and purpose of saving. This included meetings dedicated to creating a community profile, where participants map the physical environment and stakeholders in their community. We also ran a participatory vulnerability capacity assessment exercise. In this session, community members mapped out their shared risks and opportunities, including the water point breaking down.

Next, we scheduled the savings group training date with the community. We planned for a one-day training to form the savings group and discuss the best practices for maintaining and managing it.

We worked with the community to establish a Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) and a water user committee. The savings group set up a fund to provide small loans to each other and another fund they will use to pay for any repairs to the well if an issue arises. The group also agreed on a social fund that will provide grants to fellow group members and help them with funeral expenses or catastrophes such as fire damage. Our teams will provide follow-up training to support putting the savings group into practice while also offering continuous coaching in records management.

Additional training sessions will happen in the near future focused on hygiene and sanitation at the personal, household, community, and environmental levels. In collaboration with the community facilitator and local leaders, we will train households on critical hygiene and sanitation facilities to build. These include latrines, dish racks, refuse pits, handwashing facilities, and bathing shelters. Our teams monitor these facilities' construction while helping the community learn how to best use and care for them.

Finally, we will lead additional training for local artisans to teach them how to fabricate and sell locally used and accepted sanitation products that allow for more hygienic and accessible latrines.

As with the financial training, we will continue supporting the community in their sanitation and hygiene progress through monitoring visits. In addition, we will offer follow-up assistance and refresher training to ensure community members follow through in building their new facilities and developing new habits.

Conclusion

This project required a substantial collaboration between our staff, our in-country teams, and the community members. When an issue arises concerning the well, the group members are equipped with the necessary skills to rectify the problem and ensure the water point works appropriately. However, if the issue is beyond their capabilities, they can contact their local field officers to assist them.

Also, we will continue to offer them unmatchable support as a part of our monitoring and maintenance program. We walk with each community, problem-solving together when they face challenges with functionality, seasonality, or water quality. Together, all these components help us strive for enduring access to reliable, clean, and safe water for this community.

February, 2024: Katugo Community New Well Underway!

The lack of adequate water in Katugo Community costs people time, energy, and health every single day. Clean water scarcity contributes to community instability and diminishes individuals’ personal progress.
