Stories and Community Profile

Kimina – Kulimakurungi is a quite farming village, located at the far northern end of Pakanyi Sub-County in Uganda’s mid-western region.  The village is situated in a beautiful area bordering a national forest.  The trees and rocky hills that border the area make for some terrific views from this pleasant village.  Outsiders receive a warm welcome in Kimina – Kulimakurungi, which is far away from the larger trading centers in Masindi District.

The biggest challenge for most families in Kimina – Kulimakurungi is the daily struggle to collect drinking water.  In spite of plentiful water resources, residents do not have access to water that is safe to drink.  Heavy rainfall showers down on the rocky slopes bordering the village and flows down to the community.  People in the village collect the water flowing down streams, but this water is not suitable for drinking.  The surface water collects animal feces on the ground and there is nothing to stop this contamination from being passed on to residents.  Taking dirty surface water is the unfortunate reality for most in the village.

The community applied twice to Busoga Trust for a protected water source, expressing the poor water options available in the village.  In response to the community’s applications, meetings were held with the village, and it was decided that Busoga Trust would construct a shallow well in partnership with the community.  Residents provided sand, stones, and bricks for the well and are contributing their manual labor in digging the well, working alongside a Busoga Trust technician.  The people in Kimina – Kulimakurungi look forward to the day when they have a source a safe drinking water.  They are very pleased that this day is coming soon.
