Kaimosi Demonstration Primary School has two small plastic rainwater storage tanks that give students about a week of water after heavy rains. When these plastic tanks are void of water, students are required to carry water to class. It's on the students to find enough water to get through each day.

These are hard weeks for the pupils, who have sore arms and feel tired when they arrive to class with books in one arm and a heavy water container in the other. Though young, some already suffer from back pain.

The students don't enjoy recess. Any gaps in the class schedule are set aside for the students to venture back home to find water.

"I feel for our children who carry water every day from home to use in school because we have no alternative," shared Deputy Headteacher Beatrice Mideva.

Kaimosi Primary was started in 1964. They began where Kaimosi Teachers' Training College used to be, so they gave it the name "Kaimosi Demonstration." The school is growing very quickly with a current enrollment is 928 students. The headteacher told us that he admits more new students every term.

A normal school day for a student at Kaimosi Friends Demonstration Primary School begins at 7:30am as students arrive at school carrying water in their jerrycans. Class begins at 8am. Lunch break is at 12:45pm, when the students are required to take their jerrycans back home to fill with more water. This water is used to clean classrooms at 3pm after they finish their afternoon classes. Students are not actively participating in extracurriculars because they are just too worn out.

What we can do:

Training

Training will be held for two days with students, teachers, school staff, board members, and parents. The facilitator will use PHAST (participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation), ABCD (asset-based community development), CTC (child to child), lectures, group discussions, and handouts to teach health topics and ways to promote good practices within the school. The CTC method will prepare students to lead other students into healthy habits, as well as kickstart a CTC club for the school.

Handwashing Stations

The hygiene and sanitation here is poor. We noticed that there is only one handwashing facility for the teachers. The pupils have none, nor do they know of handwashing's importance.

Two handwashing stations will be delivered to the school, and the CTC club will fill them with water on a daily basis and make sure there is always a cleaning agent such as soap or ash.

VIP Latrines

The sanitation conditions of existing latrines are very poor. Most of the latrines are almost full, and the floors have cracks and holes. The doors of the latrines are broken, and some cannot even close. Some are missing doors altogether!

Because of the lack of water here, the toilets are dirty and never cleaned.

Two triple-door latrines will be constructed with local materials that the school will help gather. Three doors will serve the girls while the other three serve the boys. And with a new source of water on school grounds, students and staff should have enough to keep these new latrines clean.

Rainwater Catchment Tank

A 50,000-liter rainwater catchment tank will help alleviate the water crisis at this school.

This tank will save all of the time that's wasted as students look for enough water. We and the school strongly believe that with this assistance, standards will significantly improve. These higher standards will translate to better academic performance!

January, 2019: Friends Kaimosi Demonstration Primary School Project Complete

There is a new rainwater catchment system at Friends Kaimosi Demonstration Primary School! Students have a source of safe, clean water thanks to your support. Handwashing stations were installed so that students can clean up after using their new latrines, and students and staff have received training in sanitation and hygiene.

Rainwater Catchment Tank

Construction for this 50,000-liter rainwater catchment tank was successful!

"Our spirits have been lifted and our prayers answered to the glory of God our father in heaven with this huge tank in school!" exclaimed Frankline Atsane.

There were no delays to this project because the locally available materials were delivered on time and the weather was favorable throughout the construction process.

We advised the school to ensure that the gutters are cleaned every month and that they clean the tank quarterly. In addition to that, we will be treating the water during our monitoring visits using rock alum and chlorine.

After we were through with the project, we informed the headteacher after the completion they own it and should take good care of it. He then informed us that he had organized the community members thus the parents and some pupils to receive the project. They were called to the school and we handed over to them as an organization so that the pupils to be free to use when the school is open.

The Process:

Our staff and the school administration started by looking around the school to determine the best location for their new rainwater catchment tank. This needed to be the best site with good, clean roofing to catch the rainwater. Then, we cleared the site: excavating the soil within the required measurements to make level ground for the tank foundation. The foundation was cast by laying stones on level ground and then reinforcing it using steel, concrete and waterproof cement.

Both the drawing pipe as well as the washout pipe were affixed as the foundation was lain. The wall was built with ferro-cement techniques through six layers. The inner wall was plastered while rough casting was done on the outer part.

The catchment area was dug, plastered, and a staircase installed so students can easily get water from the tap.

Dome construction could begin after the superstructure had been given enough time to settle. The manhole cover was fitted, inlet pipes were connected to the roof gutters, inlet screens, ventilation pipes (breathers) and overflow pipes were all done to standard.

Once finished, the tank was given three weeks to undergo complete curing before it was cleaned and handed over to Friends Kaimosi Demonstration Primary School, though we will continue to offer them unmatchable support as a part of our monitoring and maintenance program.

New Knowledge

We planned the training through the headteacher whom we called since the school had closed for holiday. We informed him about the training and asked him if it would be possible for us to have the training. Since he was very excited and happy about the project he quickly accepted and went ahead to organize the participants for us who came more than we expected. The date was set by him and went ahead did the training which was very successful.

The attendance highly exceeded our expectations because the pupils came in large numbers and yet it was a holiday season. We appreciated the school management for their vigilance and cooperation. The training was done in a classroom which shielded the pupils from the harsh winds, dust and the hot sun of the dry December season.

One pupil was more active than the rest. He was not afraid to answer the questions and he got most of them right. This made us to come up with the idea of carrying a reward for the most active participants in the future trainings.

The students were very excited about this practical session and they did not want it to end before each one of them had done a demonstration on their own. Towards the end of the training, the facilitator took the pupils to the handwashing station to demonstrate on the ten steps of cleaning hands at the critical times that they had been taught about.

We encouraged them to continue with the practice at home as they showed their parents what they had learned.

"This training will really improve the quality of life for my pupils and my family back at home," said deputy headteacher Beatrice Mideva.

Handwashing Stations

Pupils can now enjoy washing their hands with soap thanks to the two handwashing stations that were delivered to their school. These new handwashing opportunities will help reduce cases of hygiene-related illness. The training on hygiene has motivated these students to share what they’ve learned with their peers at school and families at home.

VIP Latrines

This project funded the installation of six new ventilated improved pit latrines. All of these new latrines have cement floors that are easy to use and clean. And with a rainwater catchment tank, there should be enough water to keep them clean all the time.

Project Type

For a rainwater collection system, we build gutters around a building with good, clean roofing to channel rain where we want it. From there, the water falls through a filtered inlet pipe into a high-capacity storage tank, the size of which is based on population and average rainfall patterns. In the tank, water can be stored for months, where it is easily treated and accessed. Learn more here!

The members of Friends Kaimosi Demonstration are now enjoying fresh and clean water on a daily basis thanks to their rain tank that was installed last year. Today, the school environment is cleaner and the students look healthier and cleaner than in previous years. The classes are dustless, and the school continues to return their gratitude for the project which has brought such huge improvements to the school in terms of hygiene and sanitation.

"Water is no longer a major challenge in the school," said teacher Mr. John Musalia.

"We have plenty of water, especially during this rainy season, to keep our classes and latrines clean every day."

12-year-old Beatrice Akhule is a student at Friends Kaimosi Demonstration Primary School and reflected on the changes she has experienced as a learner since the installation of the WaSH projects.

"We now enjoy cleaning our classes because water is easily available in the school, unlike before where we used to limit the amount of water we used in order to save it for another day."
