Community Details
The community of Wan knows the value of clean water and is engaged in the protection of their wells and the maintenance of their pumps. In fact, this well at the primary school was created by "Friends of the Village." In this village area there are currently 6 deep water wells, 2 of which are broken down, and 1 of which does not produce drinkable water. There are 4 hand-dug wells but they have all dried up at some point during the year. After the Living Water team explained the process for collaboration in rehabilitating this broken down well, they were pleased to comply in every way and offer their support. A village meeting was first conducted with the village chief, the village councilor, the president of the village community development, the director of the school, and the president of the local water well committee. The community of Wan is fully engaged in the protection of the three water well rehabilitations that have been implemented by the Living Water team in their village. They established a 6 person water user committee who assisted the team during the construction of each project and who were trained to maintain their wells and appropriately manage their water resources. All the pumps that were broken have been restored and have changed the people of Wan. They are, according the a Living Water drill team member, "very happy!"
Wan Primary School only has 57 students, but the entire community will benefit from this restored well.
Hygiene Promotion
The Living Water team addressed the following hygiene lessons with 96 participants including; 38 men, 45 women and 13 children: Germs, hand washing, proper techniques, water saving methods, good-bad hygiene behaviors, proper care of the pump and keeping the water clean. The team used flip charts and participatory methods to share these lessons with community families.
During the hygiene promotion a grateful participant and beneficiary commented, "We are very happy with the pump that your project has brought to us here in Wan. The hygiene training is very interesting to us. It has permitted us to access clean water always and guard our pump in a good state in order to keep away illnesses. We are very excited with all that has been done!"
Community Member Interview
Community member and housewife, Kam, shared her appreciation for access to an improved water source, more for the school students than for herself. She shared, "We here at the Maternal School (Preschool) of Wan suffered a lot when our pump broke down, and we had lots of trouble finding drinking water for the children. Since the beginning of this school year, which started in September 2013, we had to go very far to search for water for the children to drink and to make cook with. I want to say that today, I am very happy because the pump is restored! The primary school will be in good condition now to facilitate drinking water for the children and also to prepare their food. I believe also that this pump being restored will help our village a lot. Truly the teachers of the children are very happy, along with the children, and all the population of Wan. May God accompany you and bless you. Thank you!"
