Community Profile

The village Akkaraipatti is comprised of 450 people living in 50 tiled roof homes and 50 thatched roof huts. All the families belong to the Hindu community living on daily wages. The village doesn't have immediate access to daily shopping or medical, dental or vision care and the nearest facility is 8 kilometers away. The only mode of transport is bus transport once in every hour.

Currently the only water source is government provided tap water, which is available to the community for just twenty minutes each morning. The tap water is supplied from an over head tank which is unclean and does not fulfill the drinking water need of the community. The women walk long distances to fetch drinking water. The community members suffer from diseases such as fever, cold, cough, jaundice and diarrhea etc. Hence this community is in very much need of safe and protected drinking water. The whole village community has appealed DPWA to help them install a deep bore well with hand pump with in the reach of the community to have access to safe drinking water all through the day.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
