Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:

BACK GROUND OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT:

The proposed Sabetab- Gaa Womens Group is a self-help group comprises of women and men who have agreed to come together at group level and address problems facing them as a community. The group is registered with department of Gender, Sports and Social Services and has a bank account where money paid in by members during their group’s meeting day are banked. The group’s current activities are merry go round, food insecurity (where members contribute their money and hire tractors to plough every individual member’s piece of land, buy seeds and farm inputs at discounted prices for all members to ensure every home expects a harvest when the season comes. The group also advocates for better habitats through molding of bricks which they sell and buy iron sheets and build semi-permanent houses for the members of the group and disadvantaged members of their community. In the area where Sabetab- Gaa Womens Group operates access to quality water for domestic use is one of the major challenges experienced. The group therefore in 2011 approached Bridge Water Project to consider their request and make appeals on their behalf in order to have a borehole drilled to enable them access quality water for their entire community’s domestic use.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE:

The community currently gets water from Cheberen River which runs around the community. It is down in the valleys which are very stippy and its water is very turbid below the recommended world health organization standards. People take their livestock to drink water in the river hence causing a lot of contamination and as a result many people suffer from water borne diseases since they drink water from the river without treating nor boiling. Those with good roofs do harvest rain water during the rainy season which doesn’t last.

POPULATION:

The Sabetab- Gaa women group has 50 members with 80 households with an average number of 6-8 people per house (500-650) people.

HYGIENE AND SANITATION:

Hygiene and sanitation of the proposed water project area from BWP baseline survey report shows that most homes have pit latrines, utensils washing racks, clothe lines, water and food storage facilities are clean. Most homes don’t have bathrooms since people go bathing from the river and carry water home for domestic use. Composite pits are almost in every home.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:

There’s need to drill a borehole for this Sabetab- Gaa community to enable them  access quality water for their domestic use and bring about their behavior change in area of bathing from the river and bathe from their bathrooms in the homes.

ASSESSING THE NEED:

The proposed water project will highly benefit Sabetab- Gaa women group and the entire community of Laboret.

WATER COMMITTEE:

The group is organized in a manner that it will from a water supply community from among its members who will be strengthened by BWP community education training before the implementation of the project.

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
