This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:

PROPOSED PROJECT:

The proposed Lelmok Secondary School is a day and boarding mixed for both boys and girls which was started in 2002 by Catholic church with an objective of eradicating illiteracy and poverty reduction in the region since it came to the church’s realization that there were a large number of boys and girls who couldn’t access secondary school education due to being left out during form one selection. Among many challenges, the school is in lack of sufficient and quality water supply.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE:

During the rainy season of March through late July the school harvests rain water from the roofs but when it doesn’t rain for 3 days the PVC reservoir tank goes completely empty then it disrupts the learning programs in school. The school management tried to dig a hand dug well in the school compound but still water potential in the well is minimal that it doesn’t meet the school water needs and during dry season it dries completely.  Thereafter, the school has to engage someone to fetch water using donkeys and at most he may only bring water for cooking whereas students have to go out 11/2km to fetch water for bathing and washing their school uniforms.

POPULATION:

The school has a population of 400 students, 13 teachers and 8 non teaching staff who will benefit from the water supply.

HYGIENE AND SANITATION:

Sanitation and hygiene status of the entire school is not good since the pit latrines are extremely dirty. There are no hand washing points for both students and teachers. The habit of taking a bath is irregular since water is not easily and quickly accessible. Therefore, community education would do to students, teachers and parents from the community. During community education, more will be taught on hygiene and sanitation, water handling, water in the home, Phast, 5 f’s diagram and the sustainability of the water system.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:

If the well is drilled in school, students, teachers and the parish priest and the entire Lelmok community will be the beneficiaries.

ASSESSING THE NEED:

BWP has seen a great need to intervene the lack of quality water problem in this school and therefore proposes for possibility of a donor funded well to be drilled in school. The aim of drilling a well is to provide sufficient water supply in school that will be able to cater for the school’s domestic use and improve sanitation and hygiene status of students’ health and entire schools’ general primary health.

WATER COMMITTEE:

There is already a School Infrastructure Committee (SIC) that is ready to manage the sufficient water supply when drilled In addition, the water committee will consist of eight people, two parents, a man and a woman, two pupils from the student’s body, and four teachers .

Project Updates

March, 2018: New Intervention at Lelmokwo Boys' Secondary School

The initial project at this school (seen in the reporting found on this page) is a display of our shared commitment to helping this school with first time water access. Equally as important to this school and The Water Project is providing ongoing support to make sure that water is reliable, day after day, year after year. This is why we monitor all our projects. Over time we’ve found that the water table has dropped in this area, limiting the intended benefit of this well. Though not common, this does happen from time to time.

Because of our commitment to this school (and the lasting impact that our supporters want to make), we’ve decided to construct a rainwater catchment tank that will store 50,000 liters of rainwater that’s chlorinated throughout the year. This is a proven solution within this specific region. To see that work, click here.

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!

A Student's Perspective

October, 2013

“If water is readily available in school we will have ample time to study instead of going to the river and water born diseases will be a forgotten story”

Keeping The Water Promise

There's an incredible community of monthly donors who have come alongside you in supporting clean water in Lelmokwo Boys Secondary School.

This giving community supports ongoing sustainability programs that help Lelmokwo Boys Secondary School maintain access to safe, reliable water. Together, they keep The Water Promise.

We’re confident you'll love joining this world-changing group committed to sustainability!

Despite his soft-spoken, calm nature and small physique, he is actually the school captain and he is the link between the students’ body and the administration of Lelmokwo Boys High School. His name is Kennedy Koech. He hails from Kapsabet and was born to a single mother twenty years ago.

Kennedy comes from a family of six. His siblings and their mother live together with their grandmother. Coming from an impoverished family and having had a hard childhood did not deter him from working hard at school. Due to his excellent performance in primary school and his appeal for sponsorship, he was awarded a scholarship by the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation.

He is currently being sponsored by the foundation to pursue his secondary school education at Lelmokwo Boys High School. He is in fourth form (his fourth year). The school has 800 students and 45 teachers. Kennedy’s favorite subject is physics as he aspires to be an electrical engineer. His favorite sport is rugby.

“I love my school but I wish that we had a constant and reliable water source,” says Kennedy. “We mostly depend on rain water and a well that was dug by the school but dries up during the dry season,” adds Kennedy. He says that during such times the school hires people to bring water to the school for cooking but the students have to walk 11/2km to get water for their own personal use and cleaning. He adds that cases of typhoid and diarrhea are very common in the school due to unsafe water.

Luckily for Kennedy and his fellow students, the school has already contacted Bridge Water Project and the school will soon be getting a donor funded well. After hearing this news he can’t hide his joy. “If water is readily available in school we will have ample time to study instead of going to the river and water born diseases will be a forgotten story,” he says.

With a project like this in his school, Kennedy can only hope for the best. His dream of one day becoming an electrical engineer is clearer and hopes that his hard work at school will one day pave way for him to support his grandmother, siblings and his mother who have really sacrificed a lot for him to be where he is today.

Navigating through intense dry spells, performing preventative maintenance, conducting quality repairs when needed and continuing to assist community leaders to manage water points are all normal parts of keeping projects sustainable. The Water Promise community supports ongoing sustainability programs that help Lelmokwo Boys Secondary School maintain access to safe, reliable water.

We’d love for you to join this world-changing group committed to sustainability.

The most impactful way to continue your support of Lelmokwo Boys Secondary School – and hundreds of other places just like this – is by joining our community of monthly givers.

Your monthly giving will help provide clean water, every month... keeping The Water Promise.
