This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:
BACK GROUND OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT
The proposed Bishop Sulumeti Girls secondary school Lugari, is a girls boarding school started in 1986 by the Friends church Quakers with an aim of providing secondary education to girl child since it was not possible for girls from the Lumakanda region to persue their secondary education due to scarcity of secondary schools. That during form one admission most girls were being left out during selection and yet they had potential to do well in their secondary studies. Since its inception the school has managed to mold many girls currently who are holding various positions in this country.
Among many challenges the school has, access to quality and reliable water supply is the major problem. The school management and parents have made an appeal to Bridge Water Project to intervene in their lack of water problem in the school.
CURRENT WATER SOURCE
The school has unreliable piped water supply which is managed by Lake Victoria north Water services board Lumakanda Region, sometimes the service board fails to meet electricity bills and a result Kenya Power Company disconnects the power supply hence not being possible for the school to get consistent supply of water for their domestic use. During rainy season the school harvest rain water which is stored in UPVC tanks whereas during long dry spell experienced during the month July to November girls have to walk 1½ Km away from school compound looking for water that is not safe for drinking since its turbidity value is below the (WHO) recommendation.
POPULATION
The school has 547 students, 28 teachers and 17 non-teaching staff 575 people in total
HYGIENE AND SANITATION
The school has 27 pit latrine toilets which are washed 3 times per week, there are clothe lines where girls hang and dry their uniforms after washing, there is also a composite pit where liters are burned from to ensure the compound is clean, The Kitchen where foods are prepared has modern stoves, well ventilated and upholds general cleanliness.
Hand washing points are scarce, there’s need to raise as many as they should in various points ones water is available.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES
The proposed Bishop Sulumeti girls secondary school Lumakanda will be the direct beneficiaries.
ASSESSING THE NEED
There’s need to drill a borehole for the Bishop Sulumeti Girls secondary school that is aimed at providing access to quality water for the schools domestic use and improving hygiene and sanitation status of the entire school. That with a reliable water source the girls will concentrate on their studies since they spent much time on fetching water especially during weekends.
WATER COMMITTEE
The school management committee will be the water committee and ensure the sustainability of the supply.
But before implementation of the project BWP staff will train the students/teachers on water sanitation and hygiene.
