This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them (edited for clarity):

PROPOSED PROJECT

The proposed Our Lady of Peace Secondary School was started in 1996 through the initiative of the parish council of Nandi Hills Catholic Church. Upon the inception, the school occupied the Catholic Church hall which was partitioned to form classrooms and semi-permanent dormitories which were constructed using timber and iron sheets.

In 2003 January, the school moved to its permanent site and occupied 13.5 acres of land which was donated by Nandi Tea Estates. All of its physical facilities have been put up through the efforts of parents, fund raising and donations.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The school has tried a variety of water sources.  They access water from Nyanas water and Sanitation Company limited. However the supply is not sufficient and the school experiences acute shortages from time to time and this negatively impacts on the student’s schooling. To eliminate this problem, the school dug a bore hole which has not yielded much since the school obtains only 500 liters per day. The school has also made use of roof top rainwater harvesting systems as can be seen in the pictures below.  Still none of these sources have proved sufficient for their needs.  The school has been forced to hire tractors from business men to transport water. Buying water from private individuals is much more costly due to transport costs which include fuel and paying for delivery.

POPULATION

The school population is as follows:

  • Students                      230
  • Teachers                      20
  • Support staff               16

HYGIENE AND SANITATION

The school has six pit latrines which serve the pupils and the latrines are washed daily and the classrooms are washed twice per week. There is no hand washing points neither outside the classrooms nor at the toilets.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

If a well is drilled it will benefit the students of our lady of peace Girls Secondary school.

ASSESSING THE NEED

There is need to intervene and drill a well at the school compound so that the students can have access to clean and safe water for their domestic use. With availability of a reliable well, the school will start a health club that will instill good health habits to the learners hence making them hand washing champions. The feeding program in the school will help the girls not to waste a lot of time going home at lunch time therefore having enough time to read and improving their performance in school.

WATER COMMITTEE

The water committee is already there and it will be strengthened during sanitation and hygiene workshop prior to the implementation of the project.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!

Aliceson Cherop

December, 2013

Our performance has gone down due to being late for classes and having to go to the water supply to look for water.

Keeping The Water Promise

There's an incredible community of monthly donors who have come alongside you in supporting clean water in Our Lady of Peace Girls Secondary School.

This giving community supports ongoing sustainability programs that help Our Lady of Peace Girls Secondary School maintain access to safe, reliable water. Together, they keep The Water Promise.

We’re confident you'll love joining this world-changing group committed to sustainability!

As we moved to Our Lady of Peace Girls Secondary School in Nandi, we found well dressed and neat girls. There came a smiling girl known as Aliceson Cherop who is in fourth form and the outgoing Sanitary Prefect. She comes from Cheplasgei village in Eldoret Town. Her hobbies are Singing, Reading novels and interacting with other students on academic issues and aspires to excel in her exams and become an Engineer.

Cherop is the first born to a humble family of three. Her farther works as an Administrator of Living Streams Kisumu and her mother is a Businesswoman in Eldoret town. Her determination in school made her excel in her exams and joined Eldoret Girls Secondary School. In form two she left Eldoret Girls and joined Our Lady of Peace Girls Secondary school and was really surprised by the population of 500 girls which is smaller compared to the school she had left previously.

“It’s been really hard for me,” says Cherop. Amidst laughter, she says that as a Sanitary Prefect   she has many cases where the girls steal water from each other. "Why the laughter?" I ask. She replies, "It’s funny that girls can steal water from each other and this are the cases I handle every day as a prefect.  I would wish to tackle other Sanitation issues but it all Zeros down to water."  Cherop says that supervision becomes hard because she can’t force the girls to work when there is no water to use. "Our performance has gone down due to being late for classes and having to go to the water supply to look for water," she laments.

Cherop says that the school has been since losing many girls to other schools because of lack of water.  The school’s population has reduced from 500 students from when I joined our Lady of Peace to 226 currently due to the scarcity of water in the school. She claims that the girls are happy during the rainy season as they collect the rain water from the roof catchment.

Despite the difficulties to access water, Cherop takes her role as a leader and encourages other students to always work hard. She and the other girls are happy because BWP will be drilling a well in the school. Her hope is that as she finishes her fourth form, the remaining students will have access to safe and clean water and that they can improve in their Academics.

Navigating through intense dry spells, performing preventative maintenance, conducting quality repairs when needed and continuing to assist community leaders to manage water points are all normal parts of keeping projects sustainable. The Water Promise community supports ongoing sustainability programs that help Our Lady of Peace Girls Secondary School maintain access to safe, reliable water.

We’d love for you to join this world-changing group committed to sustainability.
