This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them (edited for clarity):
PROPOSED PROJECT
The proposed Our Lady of Peace Secondary School was started in 1996 through the initiative of the parish council of Nandi Hills Catholic Church. Upon the inception, the school occupied the Catholic Church hall which was partitioned to form classrooms and semi-permanent dormitories which were constructed using timber and iron sheets.
In 2003 January, the school moved to its permanent site and occupied 13.5 acres of land which was donated by Nandi Tea Estates. All of its physical facilities have been put up through the efforts of parents, fund raising and donations.
CURRENT WATER SOURCE
The school has tried a variety of water sources. They access water from Nyanas water and Sanitation Company limited. However the supply is not sufficient and the school experiences acute shortages from time to time and this negatively impacts on the student’s schooling. To eliminate this problem, the school dug a bore hole which has not yielded much since the school obtains only 500 liters per day. The school has also made use of roof top rainwater harvesting systems as can be seen in the pictures below. Still none of these sources have proved sufficient for their needs. The school has been forced to hire tractors from business men to transport water. Buying water from private individuals is much more costly due to transport costs which include fuel and paying for delivery.
POPULATION
The school population is as follows:
- Students 230
- Teachers 20
- Support staff 16
HYGIENE AND SANITATION
The school has six pit latrines which serve the pupils and the latrines are washed daily and the classrooms are washed twice per week. There is no hand washing points neither outside the classrooms nor at the toilets.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES
If a well is drilled it will benefit the students of our lady of peace Girls Secondary school.
ASSESSING THE NEED
There is need to intervene and drill a well at the school compound so that the students can have access to clean and safe water for their domestic use. With availability of a reliable well, the school will start a health club that will instill good health habits to the learners hence making them hand washing champions. The feeding program in the school will help the girls not to waste a lot of time going home at lunch time therefore having enough time to read and improving their performance in school.
WATER COMMITTEE
The water committee is already there and it will be strengthened during sanitation and hygiene workshop prior to the implementation of the project.
