Community Profile

The Karero medical clinic is managed by one of our implementing partners, Staff of Hope.   Karero is located in Kajiado district of Kenya at the border of Kenya and Tanzania. The clinic was opened in 2009.

In partnership with CareNow, Staff of Hope supports 3 full-time medical personal who treat over 20 people each day.  The surrounding rural community has a local population of about 4,000 people.  (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people.  To learn more, click here.) The Karero area is a major boarder crossing between Tanzania and Kenya and a constant stream of people pass through the region.

According to the District Commissioner of Kajiado, Karero is the poorest and least educated location in Kajiado.  The average level of education is 3rd grade.  One result of this is a very high occurrence of female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriage for girls.

An elementary school nearby the clinic is one hope for changing this situation. Our hope is that as clean water is made more accessible, the school and the medical clinic will grow and serve more of the population.  Currently, girls in the school are walking 4 km to the nearest source of water.  By reducing this distance, time is saved and can be better used learning and studying.

The clinic's current water source is a basic rain catchment system. It is not at all sufficient and much of the year the tank is dry.

The drilling of the borehole here will provide clean, flowing water to the medical clinic (can you imagine going to a doctor where there is no running water?)  The well will be accessible to the small but growing school, the general population and troughs will provide ample water for the cattle and goats to drink from.  Watering local cattle, numerous goats and sheep will help the local economy and provide food security.

This very expensive project (due to water depth) will serve a very large population with a high capacity well.  The project will consist of a deep borehole, electric pump and a generator that will supply power for the well and to the clinic.  High impact and the long term presence of our partner in the area made this particular project very attractive to us.  We've brought together hundreds of donors to fund it.  Together, we're going to help change lives with this clinic, the school and the local community!

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

In some locations, the aquifer supplying water is extremely deep underground.  Due to the depth of the water, a hand pump is insufficient to bring it to the surface - it's simply too heavy.

Deep wells are typically 150 feet or deeper.  An electric submersible pump is lowered into the well and pulls water to a holding tank.  The community can then draw water quickly from these tanks, simply by turning a tap.

In many of the areas we serve, there is no electricity to power the pump.  In these cases we install a diesel generator to power the pump.  This brings the "side-effect" of providing a limited source of electricity to a remote community.
