A new well has been completed at the Kanyangena Primary School near Kendu Bay, Kenya.

Our partner in the field reports...

"Kanyangwena Primary is now functioning....I was greatly encouraged to see how the school was already using the water we
have provided. They have started a small school farm, maintained by the children,
and have crops of tomatoes, water melons and other vegetables well on
the way. They intend to use these vegetables for a school feeding programme, as well as generating a little income for the
school. They have additional plans for a tree nursery on site. It will be complete, finally, next week."

The drilling team reported...

"The school response was so positive and with joy. The pupils promised to do well in their studies with this new water source access to them. Most of them said they will be the best positions in their end year exams, since time used for fetching water will now be recovered to preps (studies). It will also reduce water borne diseases which many pupils suffered hence being away from school. Teacher also promised to instill WATSAN education in school e.g  wash of hands after toilet."

We received additional reporting that the well installation is still not quite complete as issues arose regarding how the pump was fitted in the concrete.  Teams are enroute as of April 14th, 2010 to reset the pump to ensure it is installed to the highest possible standards.   Having our teams nearby helps to identify these types of issues early so that repairs can be made.  Sometimes installations need to be revisited to get them right.  And that's really no different than any construction project.

We are particularly excited to learn that the school has already been actively using the now abundant water for crops as well as drinking.  This well site will bring not only clean water, but good, inexpensive food!   It proves once again that water projects are a foundation for many good things.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Abundant water is often right under our feet! Beneath the Earth’s surface, rivers called aquifers flow through layers of sediment and rock, providing a constant supply of safe water. For borehole wells, we drill deep into the earth, allowing us to access this water which is naturally filtered and protected from sources of contamination at the surface level. First, we decide where to drill by surveying the area and determining where aquifers are likely to sit. To reach the underground water, our drill rigs plunge through meters (sometimes even hundreds of meters!) of soil, silt, rock, and more. Once the drill finds water, we build a well platform and attach a hand pump. If all goes as planned, the community is left with a safe, closed water source providing around five gallons of water per minute! Learn more here!
