Green Mount Primary School does not have a reliable water source. Pipes are connected to a local water service, but they're dry all the time. The school management has even made efforts to contact their water service to find out what's going on, but this has been in vain.

To try alleviating their water shortage, the school has bought a 50, 100, and 5,000-liter plastic tank to store rainwater. But due to high student enrollment of 756, the school is forced to buy water from lorries (trucks) and pay locals to bring water to school.

The lorries most often fill their tanks with water from open rivers, and locals bring water from their various villages. This water is not safe, with many people admitting that they fill their containers at River Iskhu.

As a result of drinking the water, children are often affected by waterborne diseases, suffering from diarrhea, headaches, coughs and stomachaches. Students miss school, and parents spend a lot of money treating those affected by waterborne diseases due to drinking unsafe water. As we conducted our baseline, we heard of many children out being treated for typhoid.

"When we get this rainwater harvesting tank in our school, water problems will be solved. Waterborne diseases will be reduced and that will stop our children from being absent from school," shared Headteacher Witika Maina.

The school is in an urban area near Bishop Sulumeti Girls' High School where we also constructed a 50,000-liter water tank. The area is peaceful and conducive for learning. It is a very green place with maize farms and vegetables all around the school. There are some tall buildings here that are very good for businesses and rental apartments.

What we can do:

Training

We will hold training for two days. Our facilitator will use PHAST (participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation), ABCD (asset-based community development), CTC (child to child), lectures, group discussions, and handouts to teach health topics and ways to promote good practices within the school. The CTC method will prepare students to lead other students into healthy habits, as well as kickstart a CTC club for the school.

Handwashing Stations

"If The Water Project assists us with more water and sanitation facilities, hygiene in this school will improve," said Director Wesley Kibet.

The CTC club will oversee all new facilities, such as handwashing stations, and make sure they are kept clean and in working condition. The two handwashing stations will be delivered to the school, and the club will fill them with water on a daily basis and make sure there is always a cleaning agent such as soap or ash.

VIP Latrines

There are only five latrine doors for each gender. That means there are more than 70 students per latrine door. The lines during class breaks are massive, and many of these students have to not only wait uncomfortably but arrive late to their next class.

We will construct two triple-door latrines. Three doors will serve the girls while the other three serve the boys. And with a new source of water on school grounds, students and staff should have enough to keep these new latrines clean.

Rainwater Catchment Tank

A 50,000-liter rainwater catchment tank will help alleviate the water crisis at this school. The school will also help gather the needed materials such as sand, rocks, and water for mixing our cement. Once finished, this tank can begin catching rainfall that will be used by the school’s students and staff.

Once finished, this tank can begin catching rainfall that will be used by the school’s 756 students and their teachers. While this many students may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only fully support a population of 350-500 people. This school would be a good candidate for a second project in the future so that adequate water is available. To learn more, click here.

We and the school strongly believe that with this assistance, standards will significantly improve. With clean water and high standards of cleanliness, students’ good health will give them the chance to earn better grades and live a better life.

Project Updates

May, 2019: Green Mount Primary School Project Complete

There is a new rainwater catchment system at Green Mount Primary School! Handwashing stations were also delivered to the school, and students and staff received training in sanitation and hygiene.

Rainwater Catchment Tank

Construction of this new rainwater catchment tank was a big success!

"We are so happy and privileged to be visited by you. Every time I think of how great you have helped the school by implementing the water and sanitation project in our school, I feel like crying because not all schools have received these facilities. These facilities that will benefit us, especially the children," said Headteacher Wathika.

"Surely we lack words to express our joy but what I can say is, may the Almighty God bless you as you even continue to support more and more schools in Western Kenya."

The Process:

Our staff and the school administration started by looking around the school to determine the best location for their new rainwater catchment tank. This needed to be the best site with good, clean roofing to catch the rainwater.

Upon the decision of the construction site, the top earth layer is excavated and cleared. Stones are then carefully packed onto the excavated area to create a strong foundation.

The foundation is cast with sand, cement, ballast, and waterproof cement. As this is being done, the wall’s skeleton of wire mesh and rebar is erected and secured into the foundation. Upon completion of the foundation, the walls are cemented and plastered to completion both inside and outside.

The catchment area is dug, plastered, and a staircase installed so students can easily get water from the tap. A metal cover with a lock is placed over the catchment area to avoid water wastage.

A concrete reinforcement pillar is built up to support the dome, which is also made of a strong wire mesh and concrete. A hatch is installed in the dome to allow the tank to be cleaned out before heavy rain, and the gutter system is also installed at this time.

Once finished, the tank was given three weeks to undergo complete curing before it was cleaned and handed over to Green Mount Primary School, though we will continue to offer them great support as a part of our monitoring and maintenance program.

Handwashing Stations

Pupils can now enjoy washing their hands with soap thanks to the two handwashing stations that were delivered to their school. These new handwashing opportunities will help reduce cases of hygiene-related illness. The training on hygiene has motivated these students to share what they’ve learned with their peers at school and families at home.

VIP Latrines

Over the course of several visits to Green Mount Primary School, we were able to reassess the need for new pit latrines. In working with the school, we realized that the school was already undertaking the construction of new latrines on their own. Headteacher Wathika agreed that any of our latrine materials should be delivered to a school that truly needs them.

Chief Mutsembe Primary School's enrollment has grown since a project was completed in 2017, and they have been in contact with us about their need for additional latrines. This has come as the perfect opportunity to help Chief Mutsembe Primary School students, so plans are underway for our artisans to deliver materials and construct six new latrine doors.

New Knowledge

Hygiene and sanitation training planning began immediately when construction work began. With the help of the school director and the headteacher, participants were recruited from different classes with equal representation of both genders. Attendance exceeded our expectations by five people because the students were enthusiastic about acquiring new knowledge. The students in attendance formed a child to child (CTC) health club that will share what they learned with their peers and families at home.

We taught students how to improve standards of hygiene and ensure that the sanitation facilities given to them are well-maintained for years to come. Some of the topics we covered included:

– water pollution and ways to treat water for drinking
– handwashing

– dental hygiene
– personal and environmental hygiene
– group dynamics along with leadership and governance for the newly formed CTC health club and water committee

Children enjoyed discussing what makes a good leader. Everyone unanimously agreed that a leader is a person who guides and directs others in the right way. They love the process of voting for school prefects each year and were delighted to be given an opportunity to select their own CTC club leaders.

– operations and maintenance of the facilities

Maintenance of the new facilities was one topic that elicited fervent enthusiasm from trainees who could not wait to hear what was expected from them to guarantee the facilities continue to serve their school. The students and teachers committed to making sure that the tank and the handwashing stations are taken good care of. The tank should always be locked when not in use and washed out each quarter, and the handwashing stations are filled with water every school day.

"We are so happy and privileged to have such an important training session with you. I personally promise that I will keep in mind all that I have been taught and ensure that I have put them in practice so that my life does not remain the same again. This is because we have learned more about sanitation and hygiene. These facilities are so important in our daily lives, thank you," said 9-year-old Fidel.

Thank You for making all of this possible!

Project Type

For a rainwater collection system, we build gutters around a building with good, clean roofing to channel rain where we want it. From there, the water falls through a filtered inlet pipe into a high-capacity storage tank, the size of which is based on population and average rainfall patterns. In the tank, water can be stored for months, where it is easily treated and accessed. Learn more here!
