This project is part of IcFEM's WaSH program, which includes multiple water source schemes as well as substantial community level hygiene promotion, and training on project operation and maintenance.
What follows is a brief project outline direct from our partner:
Kutosi Spring is in Kimakwa village, Kimakwa sub-location, Kamukuywa location of Bungoma County. The area specializes in subsistence agricultural production mainly producing Maize, Beans, Livestock and honey (from bee keeping).
The amount of rainfall ranges between 1300mm and 1800mm per annum. A significant portion of the population lives in remote areas with high levels of poverty. The region has no access to piped water. This means that a majority depend on natural sources such as springs and rivers to get the resource for domestic use e.g. drinking water, washing, livestock etc.
Kimakwa residents have been blessed with a natural water spring which is a major source for the inhabitants. There were efforts to protect the spring in the past. However, the work was poorly done leading to a poor drainage system and the surface runoff flows into the spring. Pipes were placed at a low position making water collection almost impossible. The spring concrete works must therefore to be demolished and the work done again.
