This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them edited for clarity:

PROPOSED PROJECT

The proposed Buhuru Market Water Project is a hand dug well which was initiated in the year 2006 by Butere County Council through the then, civic leader of the area Madam Annah Wanalo. The project was funded by the Local Authority Service Delivery Action Plan (LASDAP).

The aim of the project was to make quality water supply available to residents, businessmen and their customers for their common use while on their business activities at the market and also to improve the sanitation and hygiene status of the entire market.

The Buhuru Market has around 40 permanent shops and one slaughter house among other business structures. The main market day is on every Tuesday on which Buhuru Market hosts livestock farmers who come either to buy or sell their livestock. The market also has a big store where those who deal with horticultural products operate from.

The proposed Buhuru Market Water Project is a hand dug well developed by concrete casings of 1 metre diameter from bottom to the top surface, covered by 4’’ concrete slab and finally an Affridev pump was installed. During post election violence in year 2007-2008 there was no business for a number of days hence unknown people took the advantage of political violence and stole the hand pump which was on the well. As a result some of the water committee members fled for their safety. Since then it has not been possible for the well to be rehabilitated for the market use.

 CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The Buhuru Market people currently get water from Bukaya Chief’s Centre(Health centre) from a well drilled by Kenya Finland Company No. C6995 located 11/2km away from the market.

 POPULATION

Buhuru Market hosts an estimated population of 2,000 - 4,000 people who come at the market for their daily business activities.

 HYGIENE AND SANITATION

The hygiene and sanitation of the market is very poor in that toilets are rarely washed whereas the market slaughter house was closed by the public health officer due to poor health status.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project shall greatly benefit the entire Buhuru market and the entire community around.

ASSESSING THE NEED

The Bridge Water Project has assessed and seen that, there is a real need to rehabilitate the Buhuru Market well so as to enable those who stay at the market and those who come for daily activities to access quality and consistent water supply at any time they need it.

WATER COMMITTEE

The Bridge Water Project through the Market Master have already facilitated the formation of Market Water Committee that comprises of both male and female business members most of whom are local residents so that  should anything occur, there will be responsible people managing the water supply for market use.

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
