Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them, edited for clarity:

PROPOSED REHAB PROJECT

The proposed water project is a KEFINCO well drilled during the year 1992 at Emukhuwa community and an Affridev pump was installed during the inception. Three years later the pump was stolen by unknown people since there wasn’t much security for the pump. In the year 1996, Emukhuwa Primary School was started by the concerted efforts of community members who bought the land consisting of the proposed well to be rehabilitated. The school has day and night guard and this is a sign of assurance that when BWP rehabilitates the well, it is no longer going to be vandalized.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

Pupils carry water to school from a protected stream which is 2km away. Its turbidity value an acceptable NTU value (5) only that during long dry spells pupils have to queue for a long time, and conflict has arisen with community members competing for the same supply.

POPULATION

The school has a population of 800 pupils and 20 teachers and three non-teaching staff whereas there’s estimated population of 180 households.

HYGIENE AND SANITATION

The hygiene and sanitation of the school is poor. The pupils clean their classes and latrines once a week which is not healthy. There are no hand washing points for both pupils and teachers in the school.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The project will greatly benefit the pupils, teachers and the entire community of Emukhuwa.

ASSESSING THE NEED

There is need to rehabilitate this well since it’s a valuable investment given to the entire community for their livelihood. Pupils have to go a long way to bring water to the school for their lunch programme and for the cleaning of the classrooms. It will also save time wasted by pupils while fetching water, which could otherwise be used productively for study.

WATER COMMITTEE

The BWP Staff will ensure that the water committee is established and trained before the implementation of the proposed rehab project.

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
