Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them, edited for clarity:

PROPOSED PROJECT

The proposed All Saints A.C.K Makunga water project rehab is an Anglican Church of Kenya water project which was dug by the support of the church members. It is a 60ft hand dug well that does not have a hand pump. They are currently using a string and bucket to fetch water from the well which is not hygienic. The church administration visited Bridge Water Project and requested for a hand pump to be installed on their well. The church operates a compassion programme for the vulnerable children from the entire parish, who normally gather on the church compound on every Saturday for various programmes i.e. guiding and counseling, tuition among other support which they can’t otherwise afford on their own.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The church is currently relying on the same well for water. They draw using a bucket that is tied on a rope made of sisal.

POPULATION

There are 297 children from the community, 10 volunteer compassion staff, the church congregation and the surrounding Makunga community of an estimated value of 250 people. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people.  To learn more, click here.)

HYGIENE AND SANITATION

The hygiene and sanitation of this church and the children is good. The compound is kept clean. The kitchen is also kept clean. The children have also been taught to look clean and presentable and neat.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

The church members and the children supported will be the greatest beneficiaries if this project when it is complete.

ASSESSING THE NEED

There is need to rehabilitate this well by putting an Affridev pump to enable the community to fetch water easily and avoid contamination of the water by using a bucket and rope.

WATER COMMITTEE

Already there’s a water committee capable of maintaining the supply when the pump is installed, but BWP intends to further develop their capacity during the project .

We're just getting started, check back soon!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
