Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them, edited for clarity:

PROPOSED REHAB PROJECT

The proposed Ekambara Primary School water supply rehabilitation project is a hand dug well initiated by Kenya Finland Company in the year 2002. The well was installed with 3ft diameter concrete casing from bottom to the top, covered by 4” concrete slab and finally fitted with a NIRA pump which served since inception of the well to date. Due to unavailability of spare parts of the NIRA pumps in the local market, the pump system is impossible to repair, making it very difficult for both pupils and the community members to draw water from this well.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The pupils of Ekambara primary school and the community entirely rely on this existing well as their current water source.

POPULATION

The school has 600 pupils, 15 teachers with 200 households within Ekambara community where the water supply serves. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people.  To learn more, click here.)

HYGIENE AND SANITATION

The hygiene and sanitation status of the school is good. There is a composite pit where all collected rubbish is dumped. Toilets are also washed daily every morning during manual labour. However, there are no hand washing points outside the pit latrines and outside the classrooms.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

If the well is rehabilitated in school, the pupils of Embakara Primary school and the entire Embakara community will be the beneficiaries.

ASSESSING THE NEED

There is need to rehabilitate this project by replacing the existing old NIRA pump with a new stainless steel Affridev pump that has parts available on the local market and which can easily be maintained by the school management committee.

WATER COMMITTEE

The Embakara primary school committee already has a water committee which has been struggling with the old NIRA pump to ensure its serving. The water committee is called Mumias Quality Water Initiative Group registered with social services department Mumias District. The group has installed a dosage for chlorinating water at well point to ensure quality before use.

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
