Rehabilitation Project
This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:
PROPOSED PROJECT:
The proposed Lubinu primary school is a mixed day and boarding primary school sponsored by Anglican church of Kenya ( A.C.K) of Mumias Diocese. The school having experienced lack of quality water problem in the year 2011, later on they solicited funds from parents and managed to do a hand dug well in school. The well was constructed using locally burned bricks from bottom to the top leaving a diameter of 3 meter and the total depth being 63 ft with a water rest level of 23 ft. The well was covered with a 4inch concrete slab. Therefore the well has never been used since it would be dangerous to young pupils who could accidentally fall in. Again the well requires flushing to clean up the dirt so as to allow fresh water to come in. The school since then they have never had funds to enable them buy the pump and install on the well. However, they learned from Bridgewater project development activities from other schools that have already benefitted from BWP programs and made an appeal to help them by rehabilitating the well by installing a pump.
CURRENT WATER SOURCE:
This school and community get its water from a stream which is 2km away. Water collected from the stream is of low quality and the turbidity water value is below as recommended by world health organizations.
POPULATION:
The school has a population of 1110 pupils, 31 teachers and 10 sub-ordinate staff. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 300-500 people. To learn more, click here.)
HYGIENE AND SANITATION:
The school has a composite pit, 8 door latrines for boys, 4 door latrines for girls and 2 latrines for teachers. No hand washing points in the school and there are no clothe lines. Therefore, community education would be done to pupils, teachers and parents from the community. During community education, more will be taught on hygiene and sanitation, water handling, water in the home, Phast, 5 f’s (faeces, fingers, field and fluids) diagram and the sustainability of the water system.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:
The project shall greatly benefit the Lubinu primary school pupils and staff.
ASSESSING THE NEED:
There is need to rehabilitated this well by installing an Afridev pump so as to help the school and the community access quality water that is sustainable.
WATER COMMITTEE:
The Bridge Water project staff will strengthen the already existing water committee. During the community education, the committee will be taught how to manage the improved water supply to ensure sustainability. In addition, the water committee will consist of eight people being 4 male parents, 2 female parents and 2 pupils.
