Community Profile

This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:

PROPOSED PROJECT

The proposed Ebwaliro community water project rehab is a community well that was drilled by the Kenya Finland Company (KEFINCO) in the year 1980. The well served the community for a long time but failed in the year 2005. The nira pump could not be repaired because the spare parts were not locally available. In the year 2006, the well was repaired by CDF (Community development fund) through the intervention of the local area chief. The well served the community for a while but it was vandalized during the 2007 post-election violence. The community has not been able to access safe and clean water for their domestic use. Leaders from the community visited Bridge Water Project offices and asked if we could visit their community and rehabilitate their well by reconstructing the well pad and installing a new afridev pump.

CURRENT WATER SOURCE

The community currently gets water from Ebwaliro Stream which is 11/2km from the community. The stream is far making it cumbersome for the women and children to get water as they have to go through sugar cane plantations which expose them to a lot of risks. The turbidity value of the water from this stream is 80 which is high not adhering to the recommended World Health Organization value of 5.

POPULATION

The community has 90 household and 600 hundred students of the neighboring Ebwaliro primary school. (Editor's Note: While this many people may have access on any given day, realistically a single water source can only support a population of 350-500 people.  To learn more, click here.)

SANITATION AND HYGIENE

Most homes have bathrooms, toilets, utensil racks and cloth lines. However there were no hand washing points noted in any of the homesteads.

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES

If rehabilitated, the well will benefit the entire Ebwaliro community and the neighboring Ebwaliro Primary school.

ASSESSING THE NEED

The Bridge Water Project has seen the need to clean the borehole and install an Affridev pump so as to bring it back in use and provide safe and clean water for the community and neighboring school and improve the hygiene and sanitation status of the entire Ebwaliro community.

WATER COMMITTEE

BWP staff in support of the existing water committee will ensure the strengthening of a strong water committee that will be able to manage the community water supply once it starts functioning so as to avoid sustainability crisis.

Project Updates

October, 2013: Ebwaliro Project Complete!

After a long delay, and some difficulty communicating with our partner in the field, we are excited to be able to tell you and show you in pictures that the project to rehabilitate a well in Ebwaliro, Kenya, is complete.  We just posted a new set of pictures including community education, but also the finished well with some of the community members.  Take a look, and Thank You for your help!

Project Type

Well rehabilitation is one of the most cost effective ways to bring clean, safe water to a community.  Sometimes it involves fixing a broken hand pump, other times it means sealing a hand dug well to prevent it from being contaminated.  These repairs, and often time total replacements, coupled with sanitation and hygiene training make a huge impact in communities.
