This project is part of Bridge Water Project's program in Western Kenya. What follows is direct from them:
PROPOSED PROJECT:
The proposed Shianda community water project is situated in Shianda village and it is a Kefinco hand dug well developed by installing 3m diameter concrete casing covered with 4 inch concrete slab and installed a MARK II pump. The well was completed in the year 1994 and served the community well 2006 when it got spoilt. The pump was later vandalized and stolen by unknown persons. The community then had no option other than break the slab and draw water by use of a rope and in the process the rope breaks and drops the buckets into the well and as a result contaminates water hence reducing its quality status.
CURRENT WATER SOURCE:
Currently the community gets its water from the same well using a rope and jerrican to draw water. This is not hygienic given that the rope and the jerrican can never be 100% clean when everyone who handles them does not have clean hands.
POPULATION:
The community comprises of 35 to 4o house holds approximately has a population of 660 people who directly benefit from this well. HYGIENE AND SANITATION:
The community as visited by BWP staff found that most of the homes have Pit Latrines, cloth lines and composite pit. No hand washing points in the homestead was observed during our visit.
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:
The project shall greatly benefit the entire community of shianda .
ASSESSING THE NEED:
There is need to rehabilitate this well by installing an Afridev pump so as to help the community access quality water that is sustainable that is aimed at improving the sanitation and hygiene status of the community.
WATER COMMITTEE:
The Bridge Water project staff will strengthen the already existing water committee. During the community education, the committee will be taught how to manage the improved water supply to ensure sustainability.
